This profile of the legendary Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992) takes a comprehensive approach toward her life and career: her pre-Hollywood cabaret career, mid-career USO involvement, and post-Hollywood singing career. While this isn't an in-depth analysis of her film work, Biography: Marlene Dietrich is a remarkable look for those who always suspected there was more to La Dietrich than just the glamorous--and exquisitely lighted--image she projected on screen. Her personal life was just as fascinating as her career. While Marlene remained married to the same man, casting director Rudolf Sieber, until he died in 1975, she and Sieber lived apart for most of that time while pursuing relationships with other people (in her case, silent screen legend John Gilbert, French actor Jean Gabin, among others).

Film clips from some of Marlene's best-loved films are included: The Blue Angel (1930); Morocco (1930), for which she received an Oscar nomination; Destry Rides Again (1939); Witness for the Prosecution (1957); and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). Missing is her small but crucial appearance in Orson Welles's Touch of Evil (1958); he considered her one of his closest friends.
