Customer Reviews of Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991 Film)
Kiss It's a very good soundtrack, but be it known that Kiss did not write God Gave Rock N' Roll To You. The band known as Argent wrote it. I personally feel that the original version is better.
Heavy Metal?! Excellent!
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey soundtrack(1991). The soundtrack to the second Bill & Ted movie.
Back in the late 80s, a popular comedy movie came out about two heavy metal loving kids traveling through time in order to come up with a final school presentation that will enable them to graduate highschool. Sounds kind of odd if you've never seen the movie, but it ended up being a decent movie. If anything is to be remembered, it's that the movie sported a great soundtrack. The second movie isn't so good, but thankfully it's got an even better soundtrack than the first movie. While the first movie's soundtrack might have confused people because the songs were mostly pop rock and pop metal songs, the second movie featured more real heavy metal bands. At first when I bought this, I didn't like what I was hearing and I put it away for a while, but I finally break it out again, and after knowing about more of the bands featured on this soundtrack, I found it to be enjoyable. Here's an individual lowdown on each of the tracks and the bands that played them:
1) Shout It Out (by Slaughter)- Slaughter was a decent pop metal band that came out towards the end of that era, but here they serve up a great opener rocker. This track is a Kiss cover.
2) Battle Stations (by Winger)- EXCELLENT SONG! I know Winger is the one pop metal band that was blamed for killing glam metal's popularity, but this track is actually quite good. A major highlight on the disc.
3) God Gave Rock And Roll To You II (by Kiss)- First we have a Kiss cover song, and now Kiss is here themselves! It's a decent anthemic old-style song. Not my favorite, but quite good.
4) Drinking Again (by Neverland)- Never heard of these guys. This is basically a slow melodic song. It's not that great and it doesn't really stand out to me.
5) Dream Of A New Day (by Richie Kotzen)- Sort of a fusion hardrock band that I never heard of. This is one of the lighter tracks on the disc, but it holds up pretty well.
6) The Reaper (by Steve Vai)- NOW WE'RE TALKING! Steve Vai, one of the greatest guitar wizards of our time plays not one, but two tracks on here! As a solo instrumental, it is easily one of the best songs on the disc, sounding very similar to the material found on his album Passion & Warfare(1990). Be sure to check that out if you like this.
7) The Perfect Crime (by Faith No More)- I've always heard of this band, though I never really listened to anything of theirs until this song. Judging by this unique melodically uplifting track, FNM sounds like a decent hardrock band I'll look into them more in the future. Great song.
8) Go To Hell (by Megadeth)- Now we have a rare track by one of heavy metal's supergiants, Megadeth. It starts off slow, but picks up a minute into the song. Quite awesome, but you sort of have to get used to Dave Mustaine's goofy vocals first. Stellar guitar work throughout the entire track.
9) Tommy The Cat (by Primus)- Here's another band that I've heard of, but never actually bothered to listen to their music. Very funky and progressive hardrock music with vocals that are just ... strange. Not one of the disc's better tracks, yet it's different than anything else on here.
10) Junior's Gone Wild (by King's X)- THIS SONG ROCKS! King's X is another fairly famous heavy metal band. It's a very noteworthy headbanging rocker with outstanding guitar and vocal work. Be sure not to skip this track!
11) Showdown (by Love On Ice)- I don't believe I've ever heard of the band Love On Ice. The instrumentation perfectly captures a vintage rock 'n roll sound, though the vocalist is only average. It starts off okay, but then breaks into a faster paced hardrocker that doesn't fail to please. The guitarwork picks up majorly as well!
12) The Reaper Rap (by Steve Vai)- Steve Vai is back! This time he just plays great guitarwork behind various dialogue clips by Bill, Ted, and the Reaper from the movie. Another example of why Steve Vai is a daring and outstanding guitar master, and a good way to end the soundtrack.
While this is by no means a perfect soundtrack, B&TBJ is a decent showcase example of good heavy metal and hardrock music by bands that were yet to become famous (King's X, Faith No More, Steve Vai). 4 stars overall. If you enjoy hardrock/heavy metal from the late 80s and early 90s, then be sure to pick this up if you ever see it in stores. A RECOMMENDED GOOD SOUNDTRACK.
