Customer Reviews of Big Picture
The Big Dud What a disappointment. Although this isn't one of Elton John's worst albums, it certainly doesn't rank among his best. Perhaps he and Bernie Taupin were a bit rushed, but Elton's singing doesn't sound as soulful as his singing on his previous 1990's collaborations with Bernie Taupin ("The One", "Made in England"), or his later masterpiece with Tim Rice ("The Road to El Dorado"). Yet there are a number of great songs on this album that deserve listening, starting with the first two tracks, "Long Way From Happiness" and "Live Like Horses"; the latter is definitely one of the finest ballads from the John/Taupin team, an underrated classic worthy of comparison with "Candle In The Wind", "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", "I Guess Why They Call It The Blues", "Sacrifice", and "The One". And there are a couple of other great tunes too, such as the hits "Something About The Way You Look Tonight" and "Recover Your Soul", but most of the rest is filler. If you buy this album then it should be for these songs only.
An excellent album.
Elton John is my favorite singer of all-time and I love all his albums. The Big Picture is no exception. I listened to all the songs on this and I loved each and every one. If I had to pick my favorite song, it would have to be "Live Like Horses" which contains brilliant lyrics and a beautiful string arrangement. Other standouts include "Love's Got A Lot To Answer For", "I Can't Steer My Heart Clear Of You", and "Recover Your Soul". If you're a fan of Elton John then you should definitely get this one.
Elton's most overlooked album?
Why? It's more unusual. This album is great because it fuses a bunch of styles into an obscure AC ball. OKay not every song is excellent but for the ones that are, they are great. Especially the title track and Januray, they are like hard rock, classical music, folk music, psychedelia and ballad all wrapped up into one song. But these are elements that are easily overlooked. Only a close listen wouild reveal them. A few of the other songs have a definite easy-listening, Bacharach quality. This album really has a great feel to it. But it is looked down upon because it is rather mid-tempo if not slower. Now does anybody wine about Captain Fantastic and the brown dirt cowboy being a slow album? HMM..., pity there aren't any energetic rockers like Tower of Babel, We all fall in love sometimes, Curtains, Writing, Someone saved my life tonight, When the whistle blows. But then other people can see something in an album adn tell you about it and it colours what you look for in it. My summation, this is one of Elton's most innovative, under-rated, experimental albums.
