The Complete Lineup of Laughter
Eddie Murphy is brilliant as he stars in all three of theses hilarious Beverly Hills Cop movies as Axel Foley, a Detroit cop that's always getting involved where he shouldn't be- Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills Cop 1 is a classic and definitely worth watching, because of Eddie's hilarious personality. Beverly Hills Cop 2 is mildly entertaining compared to the 1st and 3rd, because of the weak lead villain actress, poor sound recording, and mild plot. Beverly Hills Cop 3 is the most modern installment that packs loads of laughter and action centered on a theme park called Wally's World. The DVD contents are adequate, but not extraordinary; cool menus, trailers, commentaries, and behind the scenes are all included. This set is definitely worth one's time and money if your an aficionado of Eddie Murphy or you enjoy comedy-action packed movies!
Pros: Top Notch acting by Eddie Murphy, action-comedy, adequate DVD content
Cons: The 2nd sequel was bland on all aspects and the DVDs could have had more features.
Great first film, but then...
Sylvester Stallone was set to play yet another monosylabbic action film wonder-cop back in 1984. He had signed on as a gritty Detroit cop who finds himself in posh Beverly Hills avenging his brothers death. Fortunately for the world, we never got to see him in that flick although many of the elements appeared in his next film, COBRA. No, this film was not shelved, it was re-cast, re-conceived and re-written with the Saturday night Live and 48 Hours star Eddie Murphy in the drivers seat. The rest is, as they too often say, history...
BEVERLY HILLS COP
This was the first succesful police action film with a comic lead. Before that most cops had that way too cool, "Go ahead, make my day" attitude. But, putting a comedian with an amazing command of foul language up front brought in the crowds... and the clones.
Axel Foley is a 'fish outta water' police detective investigating a Detroit murder in Beverly Hills. He is harrassed and tailed by Beverly Hills Detectives Taggart and Rosewood, played by John Ashton and Judge Reinhold. His tactics seem crude and clash with the police culture in the land of sun and fun, but, quickly they learn he is on to something. Along the way he looks up childhood friend Jenny Summers (Lisa Eilbacher with extreme 80s hair). Murphy's scene with Art Gallery Concierge, "Serge" (Bronson Pinchot) is one of the funniest scenes to come out of any film in the past 30 years. The opening scene involving a high-speed semi-truck chase is a clever mixture of extreme action and comedy. It properly sets the stage for the rest of the film. Watch for Damon Wayans as a 'fruit' salesman.
BEVERLY HILLS COP II
the first film was a smash hit that created a new film genre, the action/comedy. So, it would inevitably sprout a sequel. Sadly, the sequel has none of the charm or intelligence of its predecessor. Instead we are given an extremely plotty action film with no laughs. This film has more in common with James Bond than Axel Foley with its high-tech thieves, gorgeous women and moody filming. Much of this has to do with the poor script and the films director, TOP GUN's Tony Scott. And what worked in TOP GUN doesn't neccesarily work here. The storyline has Murphy again leave Detroit to help solve a murder attempt of his BEVERLY HILLS COP friend, Captain Bogomil (Ronny Cox). He again teams with Taggart and Rosewood, but their characters have groan... errr... grown. Taggart now carries a "my wife is leaving me' subplot that is very tiresome and Rosewood has grown into a weapon happy Rambo wanna-be. None of this adds up to much other than a very slick, expensive sequel. Director Scott admits he is not a comedy director and it shows. Perhaps as a nod to Sylvester Stallone, Sly shows up in not one but two movie posters and his then wife Brigette Nielsen portrays the villains Amazonian henchwoman. Watch for a young Chris Rock as a valet at the Hugh Hefner mansion where you will see one of the most exploitive scenes in the past 30 years.
BEVERLY HILLS COP III
John Landis who brought us the ambitious THE BLUES BROTHERS and AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON directs this last BEVERLY HILLS COP installment. It would be unfair to say that he ruined the series as the previous installment was mostly putrid. COP 3 is closer in spirit to the original, putting more focus on potential comedy and less on slick action. Again, The film starts out in gritty Detroit, Michigan where Axel Foley is leading a bunch of Detroit Police on a raid that goes sour. This one results in the death of his Chief Inspector Todd (Played wonderfully in all three films by an actual police chief.) And all of the evidence points to a theme park in Southern California, WONDER WORLD. All right, its not exactly Beverly Hills but the series has become a cartoon so its close enough. He again teams up with Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) but Taggart (John Ashton) has retired. It appears he became unavailable at the last minute and was replaced by Hector Elizondo. All of that doesn't matter any more. Especially after a totally ridiculous appearance by Bronson Pinchot as "Serge". He was hysterical in the first film, now he represents a desperate attempt to recapture the magic. Landis has the most fun in creating his own 'Disneyland'-esque theme park. Filmed at the Paramount Theme Park and Universal Studios Theme Park, he succeeds in creating WONDER WORLD, equipped with its own repetetive theme song written by Disney composers the Sherman Brothers (It's a Small World, MARY POPPINS). He also has fun by casting other film directors in cameo roles. Joe Dante, Arthur Hiller, Robert and Richard Sherman and most recognizably George Lucas make appearances.
This DVD Box Set includes nice audio/video transfers of all three films. All three films have a cast and Crew interview running approximately half an hour while the flagship film includes an unexciting commentary by the brilliant director, Martin Brest (MIDNIGHT RUN, SCENT OF A WOMAN).
