Customer Reviews of Between Earth and Sky
Rhea's Obsession is worthy of an obsession This is an amazing album. Heart-rending, heart-pounding, heart-breaking, this album will take you through an myriad of emotions and leave you breathless. I bought this album based on a few clips I had heard and I have not regretted it for one second. From the first note, "Between the Earth and Sky" will pull you into its world and it won't let go. I have heard Rhea's Obsession compared to Collide and although I am a huge fan of Collide, I can't really see the comparison. This album deserves a class of its own. <

>From stunning vocals and soaring melodies to pounding beats and the kind of guitar work that reminds you how versatile the instrument is, Rhea's Obsession will please anyone who wants the music they listen to to touch the soul while making the body want to move in time. <

A mesh of surly and tranquil
I've had this album for a few days and I'm still scratching my head on how to describe it. I love music like that though; music that is not easily categorized. This is a sign of truly artful, original and creative music in my opinion. So, since I can't think of some cleaver and intelligent descriptive means of portraying this album, I'm just going to stay simple and to the point. Medieval, middle eastern, Celtic, gothic, melancholy, exotic, aggressive, and sexy are all words that come to mind when listening to this.

>The music is accomplished by two musicians, Sue Hutton and Jim Field. Sue primarily does vocals while Jim handles most of the instrumentation. Sue has a background in Celtic folk music whereas Jim's background consists of harder, more experimental electronic music. The two backgrounds are so very different, yet work so well when put together creating a heavenly, whimsical, yet dark and despairing sound. I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but you would have to hear it to know what I'm saying. Some of the tracks like `Mortal Ground' are very earthy feeling with the sweeping keyboards, acoustic guitars and whispering backgrounds. Whereas other tracks like `Dreaming Blade' are grimier with its strong electric guitars and strong vocals.

>This album has a very diverse feel from track to track, but threw and threw it's just mesmerizing to listen to. The mesh of surly and tranquil goes very well together.

This is a band to watch!
It has been a while since I've purchased an album based solely on Amazon.com reviews and sound files. With the price of CDs quickly approaching $20 a pop and the quality of releases declining even faster, it is turning into a no-win situation that I avoid in preference of my already-existing collection.

>Rhea's Obsession is a pleasant surprise. I think the other reviewers are partly right on the repeated references to Dead Can Dance, but I have to reiterate that this is only a passing similarity and not an imitation. If anything, the electronic goth elements remind me more of Collide, but I stress again that this comparison is to illustrate stylistic touches and not to imply that they are copycats.

>I'm beginning to love Sue Hutton's voice; her singing is a welcome relief from the oversatured Delerium angelic-voice style. While she can certainly achieve the tremulous vocal quivers of Lisa Gerrard (DCD) and sexy murmur of kaRIN (Collide), she employs a variety of approaches to her songs and the result is a pleasant, rich listening experience.

>While the obvious hooks are "Mortal Ground," "Spiritual Fear," "Dreaming Blade," and "Matrika," I am most attracted to the quiet beauty of "Nightshade" and "Spill Elixir." This is one musical couple that works very well together.
