Customer Reviews of Best of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Nick-essential, Not quite I was hopeing that Nick would not release a Best of albumn, for it would not do justice, yet release the songs found on foreign imports such as the bonus tracks on the Japanese release of, The Boatmen's Call. However, you cannot deny this CD. For any beginning Cave fan this Cd is worth trying. The Mercy Seat, one of his greatest lyrical achievements is captured here in its raw but you cannot better the version found on LIveSeeds. Missing tracks such as Avalanche, Cabin Fever, The Weeping Song, and I Had a Dream, Joe, leaves this Cd lagging. The best song on this Cd would have to be From Her To Eternity. If you enjoy this track check out Caves earlier releases; From Her To Eternity, The Firstborn Is Dead, and Kicking Against The Pricks. If you prefer the more mature Cave, as found on The Boatman's Call, you may want to stick with releases after Liveseeds. Caves best albumn ever, Henry's Dream, is not strongly represented on this Best of Cd leaving me too believe this was a company decision to release the best of, not Nick's. If you like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds check out Tom Waits, Henry Rollins, Einsturzende Neubauten, The Saints and the Church-(early years).
a new perspective...
The first song i ever heard of Nick Cave was "There is a Light" from the Batman Forever Soundtrack. At first I was alittle takin' away from it because it was any kind of easy-listening stuff. The next was "Red Right Hand" which made it impossible for me to sleep and to listen to it at night. I thought it would be a good idea to buy this cd before any others just to see if he had any as good, or better stuff. I was very impressed by his deep sorrow and craziness. 'Mercy Seat' popped out at me because of the strong violin and piano. 'Henry Lee' and 'Where the Wild Roses Grow' are both hauntingly beautiful and very easy to lose yourself in them. I must say my favourite track on the cd would have to be 'The Ship Song' where you find a very hopeless Nick Cave being very honest in an absence (which you don't know what it is...could it be love?). I also can connect with "Nobody's Baby Now" which is a bitter-sweet melody about a man who lost his love. The one thing that impressed me about this collection is that you get a new favourite everyday. The songs never get old and they never lose their haunting sound that Nick Cave is a forte with...
I'll keep this short
When the mood gets me into putting this CD on it's very good and I can say no more really. It may be better to get all his albums than getting this one but if you want a taster of the man's material this is the one to go with! Now I just wonder which album I should get next
