Customer Reviews of Berserk!
Series will get even better and more disturbing from this.. In Devil's Advocate, we start from the scene where Caska is in mercy of ruthless soldiers looking to rape and kill her (they start to undress her with their daggers), while Guts faces 100 soldiers alone, deeply wounded and his massive sword weakened..
(this is how Guts got the legendary title "100 men Slayer".)
Back at the headquarters, The King of Midland and his various generals meet about the all-important Doldrey Castle, long since captured by the Chudan Empire. Griffith plans an attack and the King agrees despite the protests of his other officers (since no great general could ever penetrate its heavy defenses). Only one other general supports Griffith's actions, General Raban. Knowing the outcome of the 100 year war is at stake in this battle, the Hawks attack Doldrey Castle while heavely outnumbered... and this will be the first time Guts realize that he might not live through the fight against greatest general of Chudan Empire, General Boscone.
Devil's Advocate is the start of fast rise and horrible fall of the Hawk's and one of the main characters in Griffith. This eventual fall starts when Guts realizes that he has been struggling to find a purpose in his life. He has been living his life according to what the other people tell him. Realizing that he too can have a dream and the freedom to pursue it (probably partly alarmed by what Griffith has started to become in his pursuit of his dream), he decides to leave the Hawks.
I'm giving Berserk - Devil's Advocate three stars. It's not the BEST of the series, but definatly not the worst.
Expect Berserk's story and plot to gets even better from here on with more gruesome violence and VERY disturbing events.
This is a Brilliant Work...
Now having watched all of the first 4 DVDs, I am anxiously awaiting the 5th and 6th DVD's release. The story begins to get much more twisted and dark by this point in the story.
On Berserk as a whole, I can best compare this series to Record of Lodoss War, but with much more violence and adult themes than Lodoss War had. This series is definately not for children. The story is of a mercenary named Guts and set in a world similar to Lodoss War, but with fewer fantastic creatures and different odd races (most all of the characters are human, with a few exceptions). Do not expect to see a bunch of elves and dwarves and dragons, the non-human characters are few and far between.
One hilarious bonus feature on all of the Berserk DVDs is the Outtakes. Basically, it is a series of line reading errors placed over the same scene in the original anime scenes. Watch them after viewing all of the episodes on the DVD so that you understand the context, but they are truly hilarious. It's very different than those "outtakes" on other animated DVDs, which are actual added scenes.
This is an excelent series; any anime fan should buy it.
NOT THE JOAN CRAWFORD MOVIE OF THE SAME TITLE
Some of the reviews of this movie seem to be about the film that Joan Crawford starred in. This is not that film, but another with the same title.
