Customer Reviews of Berlitz French Premier (Win/Mac)
A huge disappointment Though described on the box as "the complete French learning system," this severely disappointing cd-rom contains absolutely no formal instruction whatsoever. Instead, it lets you watch or listen to French conversations, with English translation provided alongside (in a rather clunky and outdated on-screen format), and then throws in some vocabulary flash cards and games to help you practice. If you have had formal French instruction before, this may serve as a useful refresher. But if you don't know how to conjugate a verb, this won't teach you -- it seems to hope you'll just pick it up by listening. Some people might prefer this approach -- it's probably more fun than a lesson-based approach, which feels more like high school, and if you learn better by immersion, this might be for you. But most people who learn it this way are likely to have serious trouble reproducing spoken or written French without making frequent, major mistakes. Either way, I simply cannot believe that there isn't more to this program. The package contains 8 cds, but only one is for PCs (the other seven include a Mac install, 4 audio cds, and software for palm pilots and mp3 players, which some people might find valuable). Those who prefer an immersion approach may still be disappointed at the options provided, as there are only four lengthy conversations to listen to, and only two of them seem to have video.
Installation has been difficult on Mac
First off, I want to say that I am a professional translator who also works for a software company. I bought this and attempted to install it on my MacBook. It was hard to install. I would say, compared with almost all other software products I have every bought, this was one of the harder installations. When I got done installing, the dialog box said "0 items left to install". It then gave me a choice of "Quit", or "Back". But I did not know if I had installed it correctly. Also, it only worked the third time I tried installation, after I had clicked on multiple icons and basically re-installed everything. Wow. Not easy.

>Once it runs, it looks pretty good and is actually pretty cool stuff. The flashcards and interactive dialogs are really pretty cool. Unlike other interactive software products, this one doesn't cost $ 200 or more. So overall, I really like the product. But installation was hard, at least for me (I realize that maybe not everyone had that problem).
written word is combined with spoken dialogue in videos
It is about time the one of the language companies decided to integrate speech, text, and dialogue. I enjoy the combination of the three and the ability to move between. I can use the computer, my car, and text to learn French. I am buying the Italian version next.
