Customer Reviews of Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique; La Mort de Cléopâtre
Generally excellent, but watch out for stupid conductor in 4th movement Excellent sound and performance in general. Strings in particular are really clear and beautiful in first 2 movements. <

>But in the 4th movement (March to the Scaffold), the horns are rather obscured for some reason. And Gergiev decides to put in a silly accelerando about 3/4 through the movement which is definitely not in the score. Typical hack conducting which he seems to love doing (see my review of his Leningrad Symphony). <
> <
>Borodina is rather thick/heavy in the Cleopatre tracks, but it's OK. <

>So overall, it's very good, except for Gergiev's silliness.
Searingly Exciting Berlioz
This recording of Hector Berlioz' SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE coupled with LA MORT DE CLEOPATRE with Olga Borodina is utterly amazing in its richness of sound, haunting lyricism, and simply brilliant conducting by Gergiev in the luxury of the Vienna Philharmonic. Though best known for his passionate recordings of the Russian repertoire, here Gergiev proves that he can immerse himself in the "French sound" and add another jewel to his crown. The Symphonie fantastique is just that in his interpretation - otherworldly and yet never out of control. Olga Borodina has a big voice for Cleopatre's music and does not approach the genteel lyricism of, say, Crespin, Baker, or von Otter, but her musicianship is unfailing and the closing death lines are whispered convincingly. The sound on this recording is superb. This is definitely a first choice for the Berlioz works.
Fantastic Berlioz
I love the tempos Giergiev chooses for the Fantastique. The molten honey-like flow he imparts to the music and his command of the dynamics brings out something I've missed in the Colin Davis recordings. This isn't just another rousing 1812 overture kind of thang! It's something lyrical and transformed. The sound quality of the recording is superb. (Be warned - the photographs of Gergiev show him to be the type of tormented soul who could really empathize with Hector Berlioz!)
