THE reference manual for your 70's aircooled VW Type-1 Previously had the 60's era manual. It was great too. This is THE manual for servicing an aicooled VW T-1. Some of the tools shown are very specialized (VW) and you will likely have to buy slightly different aftermarket ones to actually use, but the concepts and methods are the same. All specifications needed to assembled/disassemble your ride are here. Written for a shop mechanic, but easy enough for a backyard mechanic to use. Though, not really for the beginner.
Best Book Available!!!
This is by far the best shop manual available for the Beetle and Ghia! I have a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle Type I, and the Bently Manual has helped me more than any other book during the car's restoration. It has just about all the information you could need from a manual. And hey, it *is* the official service manual, published for Volkswagen!! There is only one downside which is not a major problem but certainly would help: there's no Index.
Too Expensive, No Index, Not Good for the Average Joe
If you were to only buy one book on how to repair your Bug, DON'T buy this one. While it does contain a lot of information, it has several problems.
First, it does not have an index. Second, it does not even have a centralized table of contents. Instead, each chapter has its own table of contents.
Next, the book assumes you are working in a profesional mechanics shop, with hydraulic lifts, etc. This was made clear to me, when the section on removing the engine said to LOWER the car to 3 feet.. Shoot, I barely got the car above 2 1/2 feet with my floor jack, and that was using wood props. Also, they tell you to use lubricants that are not common, which can be substituted with a more common lubricant.
If you have the money to blow, it probably is good to have this guide, as it is the "official" one, but I would recommend the Haynes guide above this one any day.
