Musically and technically inspired I just finished listening to Opus 59 No. 1 and had to write. This is one of the greatest recordings of the one of the greatest quartets played by one of the greatest quartets I have ever heard. Perhaps the greatest. The Quartetto Italiano had the perfect intonation, phrasing, tone, and dynamics that one expects from a modern quartet (they performed from 1945 to 1981), but their musical intelligence, their sense of line, and their intense and continuous concentration was extraordinary. I listened to the great third movement with tears running down my cheeks., I don't remember that happening since a performance by the Tokyo at Caramoor many years ago. The recording is technically perfect, clean and clear with appropriate channel separation. It sounds like four mikes with the mix done by a musical and technical expert. The original recordings were made in Switzerland between 1967 and 1975 and may have been remixed for these CDs. Whoever worked on this Phillips release deserves the thanks of all chamber music fans.
One of the Greatest Recordings in Music History
This is arguably the best works of Beethoven and one of the greatest recording achievements in music history. Yes, there are many incredible quartets out there that play Beethoven so profoundly well and express the music in many ways that the Quartetto Italiano do not. But the warmth of this quartet is unmatchable and the level of humanity strikes the heart in ways that other quartet's miss.
Beautiful, but superficial
Admittedly, if you are a lover of beauty, you can't go wrong with Quartetto Italiano. If, however, you are a lover of Beauty, don't rest here! Perhaps as a mercy, no one appears to have told this group that they were swimming in the deep end. Has anyone ever accorded them five stars after attentively listening to the Busch Quartet, or the Budapest Quartet? These earlier groups explored a realm that might well have positively unnerved the Italians and all those who venerate them. Two warnings: firstly, the sound quality of these earlier groups is initially challenging; secondly, their music might will make other interpretations seem light--I mean lite--forever after. You can never go home again. Regrettably, no quartet who has had the benefit of modern recording techniques has matched the Busch Quartet or the Budapest Quartet for their insights, or, perhaps, their courage.
