Customer Reviews of Beavis & Butt-head - The Mike Judge Collection, Vol .2
Good. First off, let me start by saying stop it to those of you who keep complaining about how these Volumes keep coming out instead of the seasons; who cares? After you buy all these Volumes you will eventually have all the episodes, so quit complaining, your voices aren't being heard, so just don't bother whining about it. Here's my review. <

>Beavis and Butthead has been a favorite show of mine since I was about 4 years old and my Mom didn't even want me to be watching it. I always thought the jokes were funny, even if I didn't understand half of what I was laughing at. Volume 1 was good, but the "Directors Cut" somewhat ruined it. In Volume 2, I don't know for sure if some of the episodes HAVE been cut, but either way, the episodes are still really, really good. There are ( like on Volume 1 ) 40 "hand-picked episodes by Mike Judge". 20 on Disc 1, 20 on Disc 2, and Disc 3 is just packed with some bonus features. A documentary, and some music videos, basically. This is a really good DVD Set, but the first just had better episodes. Any fan of the show should buy this; it's Beavis and Butthead. Volume 3 is arriving in August; so I would start getting your money saved up. It should deliver. <

No edits made to episodes in this volume
Unlike the first volume, where Mike Judge edited dialogue bits out of more than half the episodes, the dreaded "director's cuts" are nowhere to be found. Some reviewers here have suggested that this volume also contains altered versions of the cartoons, but all that is missing from them (as usual) are the music videos. The harsh fan reaction regarding the edited first volume apparently got back to Mike Judge, because he made the right decision to keep this batch in their original form.

>Contrary to some reviewers' claims, even after Volume 3 all the episodes will not have been released to DVD. Mike Judge has made it clear that Volumes 1-3 will contain roughly two-thirds of the total episodes. He considers the rest to be too poor to be included.

>I happen to agree with Mike Judge that, generally speaking, the later episodes are actually better than the earlier ones. But I still strongly disagree with his decision to leave approximately one third of the episodes unreleased.

>I'm glad the episodes collected here are complete. As for the bonus features, they are okay - I'm not sure there's really enough to justify the third disc. The main featurette (Taint of Greatness Pt 2) is only about 20 minutes long - several minutes shorter than part one - and is very heavy on episode clips. The selection of music videos is probably the only feature that most people will return to.

>For those who have the Time-Life DVDs, you will find many duplicate episodes (though not quite as many as with the first volume).

A Preview - my opinion on the format
Firstly, let's start off with the 5 stars that the series deserved. Beavis and Butt-Head was great television that pushed the edge of the envelope. It was excellent so we'll start with a five star rating. Unfortunately some decisions on the part of the DVD producers detract from that...

>Selling the DVDs in 'best of' format rather than in 'season' format is, in my opinion, a mistake. As other reviewers have pointed out, Mike Judge's 'best episodes' aren't necessarily mine. However if everything is finally released it will not be a fatal flaw. But if it means that some episodes will never see the light of day, that will be a shame. One star removed for a flawed format that may be very damaging for those of us who want to see every Beavis & Butt-Head episode in its proper context.

>Also, the deletion of certain lines of dialogue is absolutely wrong. Those of us who appreciated ALL the writing have been swindled. Two stars removed for this awful decision.

>Finally, in my opinion, separating the music videos out and adding them as extras is a great solution to a difficult problem. Some of us disliked the music videos while some liked them. Then there's the problem of obtaining copyright. This method satisfies everyone as much as possible. We get to see the show without the distraction of the videos while those who enjoyed the music videos get to see them. One star added for this excellent decision. I only wish every decision made by the producers of this DVD box set was as intelligent as this one.
