Recklessly adapted from the novel by sci-fi author and Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and set in the year 3000, the film is no worse than many cheesy sci-fi flicks, but the sight of Travolta as a burly, dreadlocked alien from the planet Psychlo provokes unintentional laughter from first frame to final credits. As Terl, the Psychlo security chief who conquers Earth and hatches a secret scheme to steal all the gold from Fort Knox (which sits conveniently in wide-open vaults), Travolta hams it up as if he knows he's in a camp-fest. (In a cameo as a long-tongued Psychlo seductress, Travolta's wife, Kelly Preston, only adds to the absurdity.) Barry Pepper (the praying sharpshooter from Saving Private Ryan) tries his best to convey charisma as Jonnie, the human slave who leads an uprising against Terl's tyranny, but he's adrift in a foolish plot that makes even smart humans look stupid.
The decrepit look of a dreary future is convincingly established (the ruins of Washington D.C. recall Logan's Run on a grander scale), but in the wake of its ludicrous climax, the best that Battlefield Earth can hope for is a Dune-like fate: it might improve in a longer director's cut--but that's wishful thinking. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews of Battlefield Earth
ONLY a die-hard Hyper-fanatic Scientologist would give more than 1 Star to this terrible pile of excrement. Have no doubt about it, This movie SUCKS DONKEY !! <

>BIG TIME!!! <
> <
>The only reason I'm giving this abomination 1 Star is because Amazon doesn't allow to give less than that. <
> <
>This incredibly stupid and awful movie has received so many critic venom for three main reasons: <
> <
>1.- Unlike "Plan 9 from outer space" this movie is a MAJOR STUDIO PRODUCTION WIDELY RELEASED, not some obscure B-movie. <
>So a LOT of people had the disgrace to watch this atrocious Felony of a movie. <
> <
>2.- This movie is really, REALLY awful, Actually, the movie is a lot worse than the bad critics it's received. By far. <
>The Critics has been too soft on this laugh out loud, ridicule piece of crap. <
> <
>3.- Unlike "Manos" or "Glen or Glenda", this movie is a 70+ million dollar production, so there is no excuse to make something that awful. It doesn't deserve critic's mercy as well.
Better than Battlestar Galactica
This is one of the best sci-fi movies I have ever seen, if not the best one! Travolta is at his finest and the supporting cast are superb. Buy the DVD and see for yourself. You won't regret it.
Now I believe in conspiracy theories
"Battlefield Earth" brings us a thousand years into the future to a world where giant aliens control the planet and humans are slaves. Only small pockets of humans exist outside their reach in radioactive areas (the aliens breath a gas that explodes in radioactive areas). The story pits good versus evil -- man versus the aliens -- in a quest to regain control of the planet.

>The film is more than just action filled science fiction. There are ample amounts of humor also. The most notable humor is the evil alien character played by John Travolta, who has a pompous, king-like attitude. Travolta did an amazing acting job and is hilarious. Of course, this is a science fiction film, so if you are not into science fiction, it may not appeal to you. "Battlefield Earth" is a great film with many original aspects.

>The media's reaction to "Battlefield Earth" gave me a good, solid reality in the existence in conspiracy theories. With so many harsh critics coming down on the film and claiming it was "the worst film ever made," my interest was piqued and made me wonder. I have watched films far worse made before and after "Battlefield Earth," and never saw the reason for that distinction. I read review after review, and oddly many spent 3/4 of their words not discussing the film, but rather all sorts of comments on its author, L. Ron Hubbard or even Scientology, the movement he founded were made. Amazingly, at the time few questioned the side tracking and general sweeping statements on everything but the film itself (unless you really consider someone saying "it was the worst film" over and over).
