Customer Reviews of Battle of the Commandos
A good "Dirty Half Dozen" Production values are excellent for this Spanish/German/Italian co-production, shot for the most part in Spain. The story goes like this: A hardboiiled Scottish commando is given a suicide mission - a pre-Normandy landing to take out certain fortifications and a special long-range cannon the Nazis are using far behind their front lines. Jack Palance
joins Thomas Hunter, a wise-guy demolitions expert, to recruit a squad of disposable commandos, most of whom are serving lifetime sentences in military prisons. From the rubberboat stuff to the train trip inland dressed as German soldiers, the film is a cut above most European co-productions. It has suspense, particularly when the squad is caught in the middle of a German mine field. Lots of well-choreographed action. Lots of real World War II military gear from submarines to small arms. There's also an emotional core to the story. It feels honest, and, except for some mediocre English dubbing of a few minor European actors, I'd say the tape is well worth the money.
