Customer Reviews of Batman
Batprince. My thinking on this soundtrack has always been, that if it was a normal Prince album, and didn't have the Batman connection, people would regard it as one of his better ones. Ok, I admit it's no "Sign O' The Times" or "Lovesexy", but it did come out at the end of what was his best decade. Even if I kept this just for the sample-filled "Batdance" and the beautiful "Arms Of Orion", it would be worth it. Toss on "The Future" and "Trust" and it's a must for fans.
SIGN O'THE TIMES it ain't, but...
In 1989, Warner Brothers was preparing to release Tim Burton's BATMAN. Depending on who you hear it from, either the president of Warner or the Joker himself (and huge Prince fan) Jack Nicholson reccomended that the Purple One contribute songs to the soundtrack. In the end, Prince's BATMAN soundtrack topped the album charts for six weeks and spawned 4 hit singles, a marked improvement over the critical and commercial bomb that was LOVESEXY.

>The songs that The Joker/Jack Napier "sings" are probably the best. "Electric Chair" is a great hard rocker with some excellent lyrics. "Partyman" is an awesome funk workout that made the Pop Top 20 and was used to great effect in the film during the scene where the Joker and his thugs trash the Gotham Museum of Art. The pop/funk of "Trust" also appears in the film during the parade scene.

>Batman/Bruce Wayne gets some good songs as well. "The Future" opens the album on a dark, spare note and uses Michael Keaton's iconic "I'm Batman" line. "Vicki Waiting" is an enjoyable straight pop song. "Scandalous" is an awesome soul ballad that features over the film's end credits. It also made the Top 5 on the R&B charts.

>The Sheena Easton duet "The Arms of Orion" unfortunately falls flat. It's one of the most sappy songs Prince has written and lacks the energy of the Prince/Easton hit "U Got the Look." Surprisingly it made the Pop Top 40.

>"Lemon Crush" is Prince singing from the viewpoint of Vicki Vale and features some great falsetto vocals.

>The album ends with "Batdance," a pastiche of the album, film, and the '60s Batman theme. Nicholson, Keaton, and Kim Basinger all have vocal cameos as the character of Gemini (Batman-meets-The Joker) makes his only appearance. It topped the pop charts and the memorable video was a fixture on MTV.

>This is not Prince's best album; that honor would fall either to PURPLE RAIN or SIGN O'THE TIMES. BATMAN, however, is a worthwhile album. Written and performed entirely by him and written to the deadline of a blockbuster feature film, it finds Prince at his best as a one man band and as a pop craftsman.
Batdance!
After the not so successful last album Prince decided to gamble and record the soundtrack to the new Batman movie, which was a major success. On this soundtrack Prince recorded and sang all of the songs but didn't appear in the movie other then on the soundrack video for "Batdance", all the songs are character driven, some should charachterize Batman and sonme Joker for example. The reason why Prince dedided to record a soundtrack album to a blockbuster movies is a matter of debate, maybe he wanted more publicity then he had with Lovesexy or maybe he just knew that this was the "right thing". Either way, Batman is a good sountrack, with some highlights.

>It starts with "The Future" that is a exellent song, it's funky with spoken Prince vocals, a haunting sound and even sound clips from the movie. Its a highlight. "Electric Chair" is indeed electric, synthesizers and electric guitars is what rocks this joint. "Arms of Orion" is a ballad, and duet between Prince and Sheena Easton. "Partyman" is really funky uptempo song. "Vicki Waiting" is a midtempo and is also reffering to Vicki from the movie. It's one of the best songs on the album. "Trust" is a midtempo song that feautures drums and syntasizers, lacks a good hook. "Lemon Crush" is one also a pretty good song, it follows the trend of this album with cool sound effects and sound clips. "Scandalous" is a emotional ballad. I find it better then "Orion". Save the best for last is what this album does, "Batdance" is the best song of this album, and the most famous aswell. It's highly influenced by the original soundtrack. It got effective drums, sound effects and clips from the movie. Although it's not meliodic it's cool and well done. In this song he also mention some of the previous song titles, either way it's a nice title track and closer.

>This album is fully suited for a sountrack, many songs follows the same formula with sound effects and sound clips, heavy guitars and synthasizers. It's not the average Prince album, and never again he would gamble like this. This album lacks momorable hooks and melodies but it's very effective when you play it from song 1 to 9. All of the used sound clips brings back memories to the awesome Batman movie with the Joker. This album is a must have for Prince fans but it's far from his best works. If you're new, start with another album.
