Customer Reviews of Batman Returns
Very welcome. Compared to 'Batman' this film feels a lot closer to Tim Burton's favoured style, darker in atmosphere, less commercial and deeper. Here he has been let loose with the source material and turn it into his own. Purist Batman fans will doubtlessly be outraged as Burton changes the histories and personalities of the two main villains, Catwoman and the Penguin, but - since I'm not a Batman fan - this is probably the only 'blockbuster' that I really like. This is due the changes Burton has made, making the Penguin a character to empathise with, his cruelty arising from the cruelty he has suffered himself and Catwoman a lonely, geeky secretary before her transformation. This is an action film with a dark core, where the line between good and evil is fuzzy, the protagonist is brooding and emotionally stilted and there is no happy ending.
There are good performances all round, the grossly sympathetic Penguin played without vanity by Danny DeVito, likewise Michelle Pfeiffer's frumpy secretary / sizzling Catwoman and Christopher Walken, perfect as the 'respectable' power greedy psycho Max Schreck, all overshadowing the slightly inferior Michael Keaton as Batman, though I think this is200 only because he has the least interesting part in the film. The thing that lets this otherwise flawless film down is the script. Mostly it is more than adequate, but occasionally it slaps on clumsy uninspired lines.
The extras are insulting. There are cast notes.
A rare thing : a satisfying sequel
With this film Tim Burton pulls off a rare trick: producing a superhero sequel to match the preceding film. The 'Superman' franchise came close; the 'Crow' series is a more typical example of the failing-sequel syndrome. Anyway, Tim Burton's success is largely down to the fact that he retains the dark mood of the his original Batman film, adding some more classic Batman villains to the mix (Catwoman and The Penguin, both excellently acted here). There's a violent undercurrent at work here - De Vito's Penguin is a really nasty piece of work. Christopher Walken is always great in Burton films (even when missing a head - cf 'Sleepy Hollow') and he gives a good performance as the new villain Max Schreck. And the true star of 'Batman Returns' is the Batmobile, which gets to transform in a number of new ways in this sequel. Lots of fun! The following two sequels ('Batman Forever' and 'Batman and Robin') see the Batman franchise kissing goodbye to Michael Keaton (and also to quality, for that matter).
5 stars for my favourite Batman's film of all-time.
I've always love Batman and his films since I was born. He's part of my life. I remember that I used to have the poster of this film (Batman returns) in my bedroom; I think I was probably 4 years old. It's my birthday today and now I'm 16. It was 12 years ago. I could spend many hours looking at that photograph. This film has always been my favourite, as well - though the others are also great. Michael Keaton is an excellent actor, as you can notice after watching this film. Therefore, buy this DVD as soon as you can and enjoy Batman!
