Customer Reviews of Batman Returns [Region 2]
BETTER THAN.., NOT AS GOOD AS.., COULD HAVE BEEN... These are the words many reviewers use to start their reviews. Whether a movie is a sequel, a prequel, or a first time original, it owes it to itself to be the best movie it can be. I really had a hard time choosing how many stars I should give this movie. There's all this cool stuff going on in this movie, I want to give it 5 stars. Then there is so much heavy bog down, slow pacing, and scenes that could have been shortened, to a qaurter of it's lenghth, I wanna give it 1 star. Many reviewers have asked for a zero stars category. Now I think there should be a I'm-just-not-sure how-many stars category. I saw this movie twice at the theater. I really enjoyed it the first time because there was so much action going on and because it was different from the first BATMAN. When I went the second time there was not as much action as I thought in fact most of the movie was time filler, very boring time filler. Then I realized different does not mean better or worse. It just means different. But this movie was not just different it was worse. When Batman 1989 was being made Tim Burton had to answer to John Peters and Peter Guber who were what I'll call casual Batman fans. In this movie Burton was given free reign. And because of this, he let everyone know he wasn't much of a Batman fan at all. Then the part that really raised a red flag was when Michael Keaton said he would not do the third Batman movie if Tim Burton wasn't going to direct it. I've got news for you Mr Keaton Tim wasn't that great of a director. Was there something going on between you two that would institute the don't ask don't tell policy. BIG FISH and SLEEPY HOLLOW were definately his best work. But his work on the Batman movies was just a job to him. He has no love or understanding for what Batman means to so many people. I don't know why some of you people praise him so much. I still recommend you get this 2 disc set or the 8 disc Antholgy. Remember bad Batman is better than no Batman.
A Feast For My Eyes
Batman Returns is a classic movie. It has great effects, wonderful acting, cool photography, a fantastic score, and is directed by the greatest director of our time. I dont know if this is Burtons best movie as a director, but its certainly worth more than five stars. The film has aged so well and still looks absolutely gorgeous. The film is so dark and moody. I love it. Batman has always been one of the more darker heroes, this film really captures that. I cant stand when people say that Batman isnt hardly in the film. I agree with Tim Burton who says that Batman is meant to be more hidden. Dont let those opinions stop you from watching this true work of art. The film also has some great action scenes and a good chemistry between the actors. Its quite hard to describe how incredible the film is. I cant see how the original can ever be said to be better than this.
A total failure except for production design and score.
Batman Returns followed the amazing Edward Scissorhands. And it showed that Tim Burton could not translate his personal vision to megabudget Hollywood fare. It is a grating, unfunny, depressingly awful film that virtually no one in their right mind would recommend. Audiences knew it, critics knew it.

>The positives: The cat suit looks amazing, and Michelle Pfeiffer was a good choice. This was one of the first films that featured Dolby Digital encoding and it sounds to this day, 15 years later, incredible -- particualarly with Danny Elfman's Ed Scissorhands rip-off score. Bo Welch has ideas to spare, some of them great (Selina's apartment, The Penguin's political hideout) some of them not so great (the ridiculously overdesigned Gotham City, Joe Versus the Volcano air-conditioning units). But onto the really bad:

>The Penguin is a disaster of Tim Burton's doing, where we see him attempt to expand one of his little pen and ink cariciatures into something capable of empathy amd humor. Yet he's patently ridiculous; pathetic, juvenile, and mean-spirited, Burton's character fails by every measure and is a complete bore. Trying to kill all of Gotham's babies? Really a lame criminal plot, out of place in this kind of movie and a new low. He is not a character that illicits much more than disgust. No matter how you slice it, that's not what you want for your arch-villain.

>Catwoman gets the only great scene in the movie, her transformation. The campy sense of humor, music, and acting all gel for about five minutes. Otherwise, the Gloria Steinam in latex bit is silly. Daniel Waters: nice try. Michelle Pfeiffer manages to make it just tolerable enough. But if you are going to go the dominatrix route, let's see her really mess with Batman's head.

>The plot is convoluted and nonsensical. There's not much to say other than Daniel Waters simply has no idea what he is doing in this three-ring circus. That empty-calorie feeling you get after watching Batman Returns? Look no further. I don't think Burton knows or cares. Listening to his commentary is not encouraging.
