Shadows of Amn is not really a sequel to Baldur's Gate. Instead, Baldur's Gate was merely a prelude to Shadows of Amn. Shadows of Amn develops the plot lines, characters, and events introduced in the first game into a mature, genuinely interesting fantasy tale. Bad reviews? WHAT??????? Seeing a 1 star review of this magnificent work of art is enough to make the baby jebus cry. The only consolation I see is that every bad review *seems* to be coming from the point of view of very offbeat gamers with strange tastes.
My background in RPG gaming: Some D&D first edition (way back when), Atari's "Adventure," lol, Zelda (if that qualifies, and we are moving through time here btw, if you hadn't noticed), Final Fantasy series up to 5 (yeah beat me with a stick, I haven't played the best ones yet," Baldur's Gate 1, Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, Baldur's Gate 2, Morrowind, and I am sure I'm leaving lots out.
Anyways, my conclusion after years of gaming with RPGs, and plenty of other types of games (Age of Empires, Warcraft, Rogue Spear, etc):
Baldur's Gate was the most entertaining single-player game ever made for the PC, UNTIL Baldur's Gate 2, Shadow's of Amn, which from what I've seen so far (and as I said, I play Morrowind, the latest biggie up to this date), holds the throne of all RPG computer games to DATE.
Now lest you think I am just a fanboy of Black Isle Studios (the game's makers), I am not a huge fan of the BG 2 expansion, Throne of Bhaal. Don't get me wrong, I do like the expansion, but it hardly adds a jewel to the crown of BG 2.
Baldur's Gate 2, Shadows of Amn, is, when measured against any other single-player game made for the PC, the single best game ever made up to the date of this post. This is my opinion of course, and I'm sure there are plenty who will disagree with such a strong statement, however I stand by it with all the love I have for PC games, and that's alotta love, ladies and gents.
In other words: I reccomend this game. Big time.

If you want a richly detailed world and even more detailed storyline, BG2 is the game for you. Sporting 800x600 and 32 bit support, this game is a present for your eyes as well as your imagination. The voice overs are AMAZING and fit quite well, especially Jon Irenicus, and my favorite, Minsc. 'You are as smart as Boo sometimes' lol that always cracks me up.
First off, if you are not highly intrigued by the amount of creation options you have off the bat, theres something wrong with you. I spent a solid hour pouring over what I could be and where I could take a class kit. I finally went with the Kensai, which is in other words a master of swords that can attain special fighting abilities. Truly rocks. There were so many things I wanted to be and wanted to try, that I will play the game again just to be those classes.
True, the game can total out to be 200 complete hours of gameplay, but what some people are not mentioning is the fact that it WOULD be, if you did every single side quest availible. In fact, the actual game itself is around 50 hours of gameplay, if you stick straight to the main storyline. I completed the whole game in about a months time, doing maybe half the sidequests. I thoroughly enjoyed the game from start to finish, there was no one real point where I thought it dragged on.
The battles in the game are nothing short of a religious experience. From the time you kill your first monster, a memphit, to the red dragon Fiirkrag, to finally Irenicus/The Slayer, you will be drawn in and totally feel as if you are 'there'. The game is not meant for you to manage your party at once without pausing, for that would be impossible. Pausing allows you time to think and select the appropriate strategy or spells to use. I cannot overemphasize how much use the Pause button has given me throughout the course of BG2.
Probably the most fun that I do have with a game like BG2 is collecting up equipment to better my character. Theres nothing better than being uber and knowing it. From the time you get your Celestial Fury, to Ring of Gaxx, youll have fun collecting all sorts of various items and reading some background info on them.
In short; Baldurs Gate 2 is one hell of a game, and is worth a try from all skeptics out there. For the asking price, you really are getting what you pay for.
Simply amazing
I have to say that Baldur's Gate II is probably the best game ever. I started playing it several years ago, and would still be playing it if I hadn't lost cd2 (A new cd already heading for my house ^^) I have never been so addicted to any game in my whole life; it is role playing as nothing has been before. Instead of the usual hack'n slash you're having conversations (and sometimes romances too ^^) with your party members, getting to know them better than you ever could in BG1(or any other game). In fact it is not a game, it is a whole new world, that you can never explore fully, as new mods are created every single day. There is no excuse, buy the game!
