Customer Reviews of Bad Dreams
S and M to another level When i heard swollen members were coming out with a new cd i was real excited. I had heard them a few years ago in a snowboarding movie, and had to pick up their cd "balance". Balance is a pretty good cd, but the beats are all really similar, with the same tempo and lyrics. I wasnt too impressed with thier rhymes on balance, but they impressed me with thier flow and creativity. a few songs on "bad dreams" had already been released(deep end, camoflauge), but they are real tight!
this album has a completely differnt feel to it than "balance". The beats are wild ("take it back", "deep end", "ventilate") just to name a few. what i like the most about this cd is the fact that the songs sounds different for the most part. You have your hard hitting songs like "killing spree" and "Anthrax island", your dark sounding songs "deep end" "bad dreams", and even some funky laid back kinda stuff like "snake bite". I picked up the new dilated peoples cd few weeks ago, and i think that Swollen Members blow them away on this cd. Both madchild and prevail have improved as rappers, but you will still find them talking about wierd stuff and sometimes nothing at all. I like Mad Child's flow a lot better on this cd. "I'm not a vampire, but I'm walking on a fine line, over fire, tightrope, barefoot on barbwire" - "deep end" The standout tracks are "killing spree" "take it back" "camoflauge" "deep end" "anthrax island" "snake bite" "ventilate" and "fuel injected". This is a real tight cd, go pick it up!
4.5 stars really. Outstanding overall.
All my ratings are 1-10.
Recording:9 Since I've been evaluating indie CD's quite a bit lately, it's refreshing to hear a low-distribution CD with high quality sound.
Beats:8.5 Most of the beats are pretty tight. There were a couple I didn't care for but I attribute that to personal taste. Besides, who listens to a CD from beginning to end anyway?
Rhymes:9 Flow is perfect. Lyrics are excellent. Mad-child has a quality to his voice similar to B-real from Cypress but he expands his content past drugs and violence. I'm not saying there aren't some tracks with aggressive content... track #2 is called 'Killing Spree' after all. But I thought the track 'Ventilate' was very interesting because they discuss the problems that nearly every band goes through.
A very interesting point to make on this CD... there actually is a theme to go with the title. There are a lot of references to Bad Dreams in the various tracks that is somewhat unusual in a rap CD. I thoroughly enjoy this CD, it's going to stay in heavy rotation for a while.
Someone tell me why all the truly good hip hop albums of the last 2 years are from the west coast?
Overall: 4.5 stars on the Amazon scale.
Surprising and yet disappointing
I was really impressed with the quality of beats and music that this album produced. Prevail was outstanding and his flow was amazing. The song "Deep End" is easily one of the best hip hop songs I've ever heard, the flow, lyrics, beat and sound all work together incredibly well. However, the rest of the album is heavy with great beats and solid lines from Prevail, but Mad Child doesn't seem to count bars well, or even at all. There are parts in several songs in which he seems to delay, to set something down, but he doesn't continue with anything that ties together his rhymes. There are several songs in which pauses would be okay if done well, but he is without cadence or any sembelence of counting the beats or bars at all. There are several really good songs, like "Killing Spree", "The Reflection" and "Ventilate" that could be made into amazing songs with a bit more work. This album, if the timing on the lyrics was better, would easily be 5 stars, as the beats are some the best I've heard, and "Deep End" is one of the top 5 best rap/hip hop song I've heard.
