Customer Reviews of Back to the World
Curtis awesome & tripped out with album # 4 This album recieves mixed reviews. Back in 1973 Curtis was coming off two awesome solo albums 'Curtis' and 'Roots', as well as the mind blowing 'Superfly' soundtrack. Curtis was riding high and i guess people wanted 'Superfly Part II'.
The Genius of Curtis however serves up this fonky treat of tripped out rhythm and grooves, a kind of off beat concept album about the grim reality of black Nam Vets returning from Hell to 'normal life'. The arragements are just undeniable, and from song to song this flows together like the classic it is. The title track is hitting, 'Future Shock' rides a crazy riff, but the real killer is the super-dramatic 'Right On For Darkness'.
Dark in some places, and innovative throughout, this was the final true classic Curtis Mayfield released. He would craft several more solid albums over the years, but this is the last of his Essential Work.
Soldier boy ain't got no job...
There is nothing I can really add to Robert L. Hargett's superb review except to say how inspirational this wonderful album and this wonderful man always were.
Back To The World, the track, was Curtis's tribute to all of the GI's who were coming back to the US, which the Vietnam Vets called The World, but especially the black GI's, who seemed to be serving in disproportionate numbers, especially towards the latter stages of the War.
The way in which he included NASA comm traffic on a song about returning soldiers, was simply inspired, and really underscored the sense of alienation that the Vets, all of them, felt on returning to a hostile reception - one that would last for decades.
A beautiful album from the genius who brought us Mighty Mighty, Spade and Whitey, one of the most powerful assaults on the stupidity of racism ever recorded.
We were blessed to have him with us for a while, and we are saddened by his passing.
Found Good Music
It was a great relief to have found a place where I could purchase this exquisite recording by the Great Curtis Mayfield.
I remember first hearing this album during the Vietnam War. The poignant tracks were very relevant to the times, raised consciences and helped to ease the pain endured during the turbulent sixties and early seventies. The passing of Curtis Mayfield appears to have been a minor event. But his contributions to black society are immeasurable. In the history of the civil rights struggle, Curtis contributed immensely to the lifting of black self-worth. The lyrical skills exhibited by Curtis on this recording rival some of the greatest European and American poets. The musical composition further helps to envelope the listener in a blanket of tranquility. When you consider the baseline and percussion contained in Curtis' solo albums the desire to dance immediately occurs. Curtis may longer be with us but a soul that could compose some beautiful music has to be in an eternal place that we all must aim to reach. If we had music of this caliber today the world would be a much peaceful place. I know you will enjoy this also.
