The first episode, "Midnight on the Firing Line," plays at a breathless pace, introducing Commander Susan Ivanova (Claudia Christian) and establishing the conflict between the Narn and Centauri races as represented by their ambassadors, G'Kar (Andreas Katsulas) and Londo Mollari (Peter Jurasik). Then follow several mediocre episodes that initially give the impression that B5 is a Star Trek clone afflicted with "silly alien of the week" syndrome. With "And the Sky Full of Stars," B5 really begins to hit its stride, Sinclair being forced to relive his mysterious experiences during the Earth-Minbari war. Filler shows such as "TKO" are notable only for being controversially violent, while the disappointing "Grail" points to writer-creator J. Michael Straczynski's fascination with Arthurian mythology. "Signs and Portents" introduces the sinister Mr. Morden (Ed Wasser) and offers the chilling first appearance of the Shadows, an ancient alien threat.
B5 hits warp speed with a run of exceptional episodes building to the season finale. The two-part "Voice in the Wilderness" has Mars breaking into open revolt against Earth and the discovery of a "Great Machine" on the dead world Epsilon 3. Referencing 1950s sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet, the story leads to the superb time-travel-based "Babylon Squared." Season finale "Chrysalis" proves more than just the usual television cliffhanger, placing Minbari ambassador Delenn in conflict with her ruling Grey Council and forcing on her a decision that laid the groundwork for Babylon 5's eventually becoming a great love story. --Gary S. Customer Reviews of Babylon 5 - The Complete First Season
Wake-Up Call Preconditioned by Star Trek, it wasn't until viewing a second B-5 episod that it hit home: this series was realistic enough to frighten me, to re-shape my views on television, SiFi, life and the universe - which is what the best of SiFi and television should do for us. This was achieved by a faultless attention to detail which makes each episod greater than the sum of its parts, which are formidable: fine writing, directing, acting, set design (and dressing), stunning music, costuming, makeup, special effects, etc. Star Trek TNG will always hold a special place in my heart - but the attitudes and goals of BABYLON 5's heros is how I hope we will face the future - while giving us a boost in the present. Dare to conquer fear of the unknown! <
>PS: Even my husband, who does NOT like Sience Fiction, is now hooked!
Great Tone
There are a lot of shows out there. Now there are even quite a few Science Fiction shows. For instance, the new Battlestar Galactica has even seemed to have more success at trying to be Babylon 5 than Babylon 5 had at being Babylon 5. Battlestar Galactica is pretty much all about humans. While Babylon 5 is, too, there are a great number of realistic aliens on the space station that help give the human saga more dramatic weight and greater scope than is accomplished in any other TV series.

>If you're a fan of Twin Peaks, Alias, or 24, then chances are that you can handle Babylon 5's impressive 5 year "Written Novel for Television" approach to storytelling. The show has its weaknesses, but give it a chance and its strengths will far outweigh them. It is one of the most meaningful TV programs ever made.
Can I give it 6 Stars?
An excellent series, Babylon 5, brings to the screen the parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major station under Human control in neutral space.

>The setting is the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3. The date is 2258, ten years after the Earth-Minbari War, and representatives from the five major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, Narns, and the Vorlons, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at B5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. The complications, however, have only just begun...

>Michael O'Hare, Mira Furlan, Andrea Thompson (who is HOT!!!), Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the series is without a doubt guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment.

>The only (minor) setbacks are in relation to:
<
>1) The Centauri Republic being run by... an emperor! Am I missing something?
<
>2) What was the point of episode TKO? What a waste of an episode of an otherwise wonderful show.
<
>On the positive side:
<
>1) The GREAT plot and concept.
<
>2) The GREAT characters (especially the aliens ones).
<
>3) The wonderful feeling of being addicted to the show and wanting more!

<
>BTW, as others have also pointed out, Chief of Security Garibaldi is awfully similar to Bruce Willis (!); was that coincidental or did it just turn out that way?

>Anyway, Babylon 5 is a series definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!
