Customer Reviews of Baby
great for teens, adults, and secondary teachers... This book came highly reccomended to me from middle school teachers from across the country at a recent conference. I am a critical reader that is not easily impressed. The book had me in tears.
On the surface, it is the story of Larkin and her family who live on an island frequented by vacationers in the summer and the baby, Sophie, who is left on their doorstep. Beneath this story, lies truths about the power of words and their ability to help us to heal from even the most horrific tragedy.
As Sophie, a darling one-year-old, learns to speak, sing, and dance, the family learns to speak about the tragedy that shattered their lives. I read the first two chapters to my class of inner-city seventh-graders and had them clamoring to read the rest on their own. I read it to my seven-year-old son and he relished every moment.
A perfect book....also beautifully written...like poetry...
Baby is an emotional book about an abandoned baby
What would you do if you found a baby in front of your house? Well in the novel Baby, a family finds an abandoned baby in a basket with a letter. The letter stated the baby's name, Sophie and her age, almost one year old. The mother wrote in the letter that she would one day get her daughter. Larkin, her family, and the neighborhood, all took care of Sophie. They shared the responsiblity of bathing and feeding her. The plot takes place for ten years. I really liked this story because the plot was very easy to understand because it was separated into parts.
The story's setting begins at the end of a summer and ends at the summer ten years later. The setting in the story changes many times. It changes seasons and they even go to different towns. The weather changes throughout the story. The story takes place over a ten year period. It was easy to keep up with everyone during the change of settings because it was written so clearly. The setting throughtout the entire story is explained very clearly, whether inside or out. Buy this heartwarming book and love it forever.
