Customer Reviews of Automatic
best Mary Chain album The Mary Chain is one of my all-time favorite rock band and I have most of their stuff, minus the b-albums and others. All their albums have great songs, but I like Automatic the best because most of the songs are great and it is the most rockin' Mary Chain album by far. The two throwaway songs are "gimme hell" and "sunray", but besides that, it is a strong album. "PsychoCandy" gets all the critics review but I can take only so much feeback; I need some real substance. "Darklands" was the first Mary Chain album that really caught me, and it's a good one with it's catchy melodic tunes. Honey's Dead is good also, but I keep refering back to Automatic with it's catchy hard rockin' tunes!
Freakin' phenomenal for "Head On" and "Here Comes Alice"
The rest of the cd is solid but not a musical epiphany like Psychocandy. "Head On" is easily one of my favorite pop ditties of all time coming from any band. It is just straight on driving pop rock with a sexual tinge. Like all of the other songs on Automatic, it is devoid of the overwhelming feedback. When I think of all that a pop rock song can be, all the cliches, "Head On" might be the epitome.
The album as a whole does not have the songwriting majesty found in Psychocandy and parts of Darklands (I don't own the other albums). Also, the music is not earth shattering. Automatic sounds familiar, like some other late 80's alterna- pop records. I would say its somewhere between Love and Rockets and The Mighty Lemondrops works of that time period.
Its a shame that JAMC went in the wrong direction and missed participating in an important musical movement that they helped to birth. I would have liked to see JAMC move more into "wall of sound" type music synonomous with bands like My Bloody Valentine. It would have an easy extension from Psychocandy. Their longevity would have been assured.
Great CD...
This cd is great, I got into JAMC thru the video for 'Head On', and I bought the cd, and its great!! If you like some 80's dance beats you'll like this, although its really different then Pyschocandy, this is a great album. Songs like: Here comes alice, Blues from a gun, Between planets, Head on, Half way to crazy arr all amazing tracks. It's a shame this is an import though. I'm now buying the BBC Live cd. it's cool to hear the songs without their drum machine drummers...
