Customer Reviews of Audio
The tunes without the spectacle Probably the only band more famous for their concert tours than the Grateful Dead, Blue Man Group is also the most original band to catch public interest in a long time. This is because they make a lot of their own instruments. From swoosh of the Air Poles to the trademark PVC Instrument part of the fun of hearing their music is experiencing new instruments. Audio, the only Blue Man release to date, lets you experience the unique sound of Blue Man better than their black-light sensitive, bizarre antic concerts. The music is mostly of a more chilled and dark sound than their reputation as fun-for-the-whole-family weirdos (they once covered Robin Williams in paint and swung him against a canvas several times, then had him sign it) would imply. The group, which is Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton, and Chris Wink, says that Audio is a studio album because their performance music is constrained by the space in the theaters and the space needed for the on-stage action. A lot of people are more into the stage shows than the CD. I can't really blame them, because the stage shows are just that cool. But this CD is a definitive volume for any music-aholic. Aside from being the most original sound that you'll find, probably anywhere, the sound is really good. Darker and mellower than you'd expect, but definately worth taking an hour out of your life, here and there, to experience.
A phenominal extrapolation of the stage show
I'm *extraordinarily* biased in this review, as I've seen the show six or seven times already, but this CD is not a mere soundtrack of the show. There are many similarities between the stage show songs and the songs on the album, but the BMG here chooses to expand on the melodies and rhythms from the show and really just let loose! There's about a full hour of music here, and it's the perfect thing to pop into the stereo, crank up *REALLY LOUD* and bug the hell out of your neighbors. If you've seen the show, you're guaranteed to love this disc. If you've never seen the show or never even heard of the Blue Men, this CD will serve as a wonderful introduction to their wild and wonderous world. A definite must-listen for everyone!
Audio Delight
The Blue Man Group is one of the more unique acts in theater today. Taking the stage in New York, Boston, Chicago and Las Vegas are the three Blue Men who communicate only with facial expressions, action and music. Their shows are part music and part vaudeville, but the amazing aspect is all the instruments the Blue Men play are homemade. From xylophone looking PVC drums, to Drumbones, to chewing Captain Crunch in time, these men make noise from anything they can get their hands on, except for this noise is musical.
Hence the album "Audio", which is an audio excursion through the sounds of the Blue Man Group and their sounds from a strange assortment of rhythm instruments. The album covers many of the songs played during their performance, plus more. The rhythms are strong and dominate the album as they use their instruments even though you cannot see them. Backed by drums, a guitar and bass, this album is an experiment of sound. The sound can only be classified as a rock orchestra. All the songs are instrumental, and the sound might leave you thinking along the lines of Joe Satriani (if the drum took center stage rather than the guitar). Quiet at times, and loud and explosive at others, the music travels from one extreme to the next and back with never a dull moment.
If you have seen the Blue Man Group before, this is a must to have the music played. If you haven't seen the music before, the album is a must just to see the instruments they have created using PVC tubes long enough to fill warehouses. A unique group that must be seen, but only heard to be appreciated.
