Customer Reviews of Atomic Playboys
an overlooked gem I bought this album in 2002, more than a decade after it was released. It's a shame that this album never caught on, because, overall, this is an excellent album. It's full of great rockers with good, catchy hooks. However, there are a few faults. It is rather dated, and clear to the listener that this album came out in the 1980s. However, if you like 80s rock music, than that wont be a problem. The singer, Perry McCarty isn't the most dynamic or charismatic singer in the world. He sounds like a million other generic 80s glam singers. That's not really a problem though, because the centerpiece of this album is Steve Stevens. Steve Steven's plays brilliantly throughout the album. If you love his flashy, screeching guitar solos from his three albums with Billy Idol, then you wont be let down. There are several bluesy rockers on this album as well. Apart from the singer, the only other fault of this album are the lyrics to "Pet the Hot Kitty," probably the only throwaway song on the album. Despite its few faults, this is an excellent album, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes 80s rock.
A solid rock album!
On the one hand, "Steve Stevens Atomic Playboys" is a heavy metal album, but on the other hand Stevens take a step beside the more traditional formula. As some of you might know Stevens is the guitar player in Billy Idols band, and some of the songs on this release have obvious similarities to some songs by Billy Idol.
Even 'tho the music itself can be seen as heavy metal in songs like the excellent "Atomic playboys" and "Crackdown", there's something different about the vocal arrangement/structure, something that makes them kinda interesting. In "Power of suggestion" there's a horn section included, which makes it all more in the musical line of The Commitments than heavy metal in general. A great energetic version of glam rockers Sweet's "Action" can also be experienced on this release.
"Soul on ice" and "Pet the hot kitty" are above average, but the mediocre ballad "Desperate heart" is rather below the average standard. "Evening eye" brings a similar feeling as David Lee Roth's "Skyscraper", while "Woman of 1.000 years" is the albums closest to Billy idol. "Run across desert sands" (instrumental) is more a way for Stevens to show off than it's interesting for us to hear. The closing song "Slipping into fiction" is a good tune - nothing more, nothing less. I'd like to give this album more than 3 stars, but it would be slightly wrong to claim that it's worth 4 stars.
It is certainly a good rock album, worth to have in your collection. And if you're musical curious I'd suggest you buy it!
Awesome Debut
This is an awesome debut from Steve Stevens, who was formely Billy Idol's guitar slinging mad man. Stevens goes crazy in songs like Pet The Hot Kitty, but shines with grace and fluid style on songs like Desert Sands. As a guitar player, I would have to say that Steve Stevens has to be one of my all time favorites. I would recommend it to anyone....
