How Do We Explicate an Implicate Order? The five day conference, "Art meets Science and Spirituality in a changing Economy", was inspired by the artists Joseph Beuys and Robert Filliou, who felt that they had a responsibility to help develop a broader vision of our changing world. Following their lead, Dutch artist Louwrien Wijers organized this event, which was documented by Sheldon Rochlin for Mystic Fire Video.
Part One, 'From Fragmentation to Wholeness', is primarily based on the work of quantum physicist David Bohm and his theories regarding 'Wholeness and the Implicate Order', which posit that their is something like life and mind enfolded within everything. The majority of the tape is spent clarifying these theories by bouncing Mr. Bohm's ideas off of artist Robert Rauchenberg, economist Stanislav Menshikov and Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader Tenzin Gyatso[ the Dalai Lama ].
The panelists are shown in short video portraits: the Dalai Lama in India, David Bohm at his office in London and Robert Rauchenberg creating a work in his Florida studio. These portraits are intercut with the conference footage at appropriate points within the dialog, with the portraits helping to detail a specific idea that each participant brings to the above theme.
In short: Bohm feels that wholeness can be manifested as an attitude or approach to reality rather than as a specific instance of mystical insight. Menshikov feels that the vast majority of people experience happiness in simple things, as long as poverty can be avoided. The Dalai Lama feels that having a simple good heart is an actual manifestation of personal wholeness and can be considered to be a proper response to the whole of created interdependent reality.
'From Fragmentation to Wholeness' exists as a unique "mental sculpture", primarily for those with an interest in philosophy as a possible response to life's complexity.
The Dalai Lama and other smart people discuss creativity
In the "Art Meets Science" series speakers from decidedly different disciplines who gathered for a historic five-day conference in Amsterdam in 1990 and now share their deep thoughts with the rest of us. Volume 1, "From Fragmentation to Wholeness" is a symposium on creativity in science, nature, art and biology featuring pop artist Robert Rauschenberg, Russian economic Stanislav Menshikov, physicist David Bohm, and the Dalai Lama. Each talks about not only ways of implementing their creative ideas and theories but also about how to create a compassionate and caring society. This video, which runs 58 minutes, is certainly interesting but be aware that some of this stuff is going to be way over the heads of your students. However, you only need to plant one seed and there is enough here that a couple of things should really hit home with most of them. Other volumes in the series deal with "Crisis of Perception," "The Chaotic Universe," "The Shifting Paradigm," and "The Transforming World." Teachers would be best off picking one of these to show, since the entire series would probably be a bit much.
