Customer Reviews of Arkanoid
A classic I remember playing Arkanoid in the arcades as a young boy, and loving the simplistic yet involving title. It took me years to finally hunt down a copy on the NES, but when I did, I knew the search was, for the most part, worthwhile. Read on for my review of this excellent title.
Graphics: Very basic, even for the NES. Not really a strength for the game, but certainly no weakness either. 3/5
Play Control: Control differs, depending on whether you play with a standard controller, or the dial controller you got if you bought the game new. Since most players just have the controller, that's what this category's rating is for. Basically, you just move side to side, and on occassion, use other buttons for enhancements. Very simple and to the point. 4/5
Challenge: Arguably the toughest game on the NES (well, maybe next to Ghosts And Goblins.) The game starts easy, but as anothe reviewer stated, the later levels are EXTREMELY difficult. The fact that there aren't continues doesn't help things, either. I won't lie, I've never beaten this game without a game enhancer. 5/5
Theme/Fun: Bounce a ball to break blocks. I know, this sounds a lot like Breakout. But this game adds a nice enhancement - ability capsules. If your bar touches a capsule, you get an enhancement. (Light blue makes the ball split in three, Dark blue makes the rod longer (what does THAT remind you of?), red allows your bar to shoot lasers, green lets you catch the ball on the bar, gray gives you an extra life, orange slows the ball down, and pink opens a gate to the next level.) There are also enemies to improve the difficulty of your gaming experience. This is a tough game, but still very fun. 3.75/5
Sound/Music: Plenty of sound but no music. There are very short songs (push start on title screen, game over, start a new round, etc.), but that's it. You may as well pop a CD in your player and get music THAT way. 3/5
Storyline: A block-busting game with a STORY? Yeah, I found that weird too. Basically you have to clear away debris so that you can reach a new peaceful world. Not a very great story, but hey, at least it's got one! 2.5/5
Originality: They took the involving Breakout concept and added ways to make it better. I am very pleased, and originality is, therefore, one of the game's strengths. 4/5
Replay value: Okay, this game isn't quite Tetris quality, but it's still an excellent puzzler, and you'll want to try and set a high score every now and again. 3/5
Overall Score: 3.75/5
Arkanoid is an excellent puzzle title, even if it never became quite as well known as games like Tetris and Dr. Mario. This game is tough to come by, though. If you've got a Super Nintendo, take my advice - Skip this game, and get Arkanoid - Doh It Again for that system.
Arkanoid
This game is pretty fun but the problem with this game is that unlike TETRIS or DR MARIO, the levels start to get really, really hard to the point of frustration and the end levels are truly almost impossible.
Your goal is to break the breaks with a PONG-like setting. You get the little paddle at the bottom and you have a bouncing ball and with those you bounce the ball off of the paddle and break the bricks. But be warned because some of the bricks take several hits to break! Don't worry because when you break bricks, you get power ups and extra points as well.
Like I said this game was pretty fun but I assure you, once you get to the higher levels (20+), the game really cranks into super hard mode and it's way too hard. Whereas games like TETRIS and DR MARIO, you have to be quick and think of strategy, in ARKANOID, you have to do that and you also have to have quick reflexes because if you miss the ball, you lose a life.
All in all, it's pretty good for advanced gamers for younger and inexperienced gamers should stay away from this one. If that happens to be you, check out TETRIS and TETRIS 2 and DR MARIO. Again, hard game but fun if you're looking for a good challenge.
I MISS MY ARKANOID DIAL
This game stole HOURS of my youth. FRUSTRATING and ADDICTING game that recquires mad knob turning and spacial skills. 32 lvls of block breaking of greatness (unless you get that special lvl warp) that get sequentially more impossible to beat.
