Customer Reviews of Apollo 18
Excellent CD! Apollo 18 shows TMBG's true quirkyness. This cd is probably the most morbid of all the TMBG albums, everywhere from getting incinerated by a statue to a sumbliminal Star Trek episode! This album was truly off-the-wall, and showed the Johns' true genius. My personal favorite songs off the album were The Statue Got Me High, and See The Consellation. Both are infectious rock-songs with extra zip and dare I say wicked electric guitar. Both make it worth it to buy the cd alone. There are also The Guitar, a funked up remake of The Lion Sleeps Tonight which is definetely one of the best, and the morbid but power-pop clever I Palindrome I, which is also a thrilling track. Fingertips was hilarious, and Dinner Bell was genious. There were some nice pop-tunes like Narrow Your Eyes and If I wasn't shy, and some bizzare but greats, like the older Which describes (eh, you know the rest), and Hall of Heads. The quirky My evil Twin is a fun pop-rock song worth a mention. Then there was the morbid but hilarious Turn Around. Along with the mosh-pit song DIg My Grave, the lounge She's Actual Size, the educational Mammal, the experimental Spider, and the sumbliminal trek yeilding Space Suit, this makes an all-together fun album which is delightfully infectious. But a bit of a warning first. This isn't the same TMBG, it is a more aquired taste. At first I thought it was the worst, but now I love and appreciate for what it is: a masterpiece. But Flood still takes the cake :)
Easily the best TMBG album. Very easily.
I know people can never pick a favorite album for a band like They Might Be Giants, because they're all fantastic in their own special way. Right? Well, I feel the same way, so why am I saying this is the greatest TMBG album? Well, simply, I love every song on here. On every other TMBG album, there's at least one or two songs I skip, but I never touch any buttons on my CD player until i've listened through the whole thing. That said, I'm aware that many many other people have written reviews on this CD, so I'll just pick apart every song and point out the good and bad points.
1. Dig My Grave - A semi-catchy, instrument-heavy little piece with some nice guitar and cello parts, and a sparse assorment of fuzzy vocals. I suppose that if I were to skip any song on the CD it'd be this one.
2. I Palindrome I - One of the first TMBG songs I ever had, and still one of the catchiest. Quirky, clever lyrics accompany upbeat instruments. Much has already been said of this song, so I don't need to.
3. She's Actual Size - More focused on vocals than instruments. Again, everyone and their mother has heard this and/or written a review about it.
4. My Evil Twin - A catchy, clever (It's hard to describe songs like these, i've been using the same adjectives over and over again) song with a really kickass guitar. That is all.
5. Mammal - One of the underdogs of the CD. If I recall correctly, this is TMBG's first foray into the "edutainment" category, later improved upon with Why Does The Sun Shine," "Meet James Ensor" and "James K. Polk." The music isn't in this song seems to lay low and let the Johns tell their tales of creatures with large four-chambered hearts and a very high metabolism rate. Yeah, you get the idea.
6. The Statue Got Me High - QUIRKY. CLEVER. SAME DAMN ADJECTIVES.
7. Spider - One of the only songs i've ever listened to where attempting to sing along makes one burst into laughter. WEll, at least, I do. :P It sounds like a bizarre cut and paste job of supervillans from old TV shows ranting about killing/stopping/stepping on poor ol' Spider. Often overlooked.
8. The Guitar - This is one of the most polished TMBG songs i've EVER heard. This is also one of the few TMBG songs that doesn't get odd stares from passerby when I blare it on my stereo. The hypontic bass, "stick hitting something very rapidly" sounds, and excellent percussion are only the beginning. Once again, this song is much more about the music than it is about the lyrics. Recommended for parties. Do not ingest.
9. Dinner Bell - Completely the opposite of The Guitar. This song is all about the slightly schiezophrenic, maddeningly infective lyrics. Don't be surprised if you find yourself murmuring "i've been leaving on my things" in the randomest possible locations. It's that catchy.
I'm running out of room, I think, so i'm just going to skip to the songs where I actually have something to say about them.
11. Hall of Heads - The first part is instrumental, and in my opinion far superior to the latter half. About halfway through the instrumental a violin/cello and harpischord come in and play one of the most alluring ditties i've ever heard. Then the horns kick in and the actual song starts and you get swept up in the bizarre lyrics.
15. Turn Around - Did I say Mammal was the underdog on this CD? Sorry, I meant to say that this track was. This is completely different from every other track on the entire CD. It's a swingin' piece with free-sounding accordion, bass, and guitar lines. It's so damned catchy you'll be humming the tune for weeks to come. It's one of the few songs where the lyrics and music combine perfectly to tell a morbid, somewhat fascinating tale of (as far as I can tell) talking to the dead, being buried alive by a former dance instructor, and being sung to by an evil railroad engineer. I'm not very good at interpreting lyrics, sorry. :P
And finally, we have 16. Hypnotist of Ladies. I would probably hate this song, but I absolutely love the simple, witty lyrics and the semi-trippy guitar. And my wrists are getting tired now, so I guess i'm done. Hope this helps.
What's that blue thing doing here?
This album by They Might Be Giants is one of their best efforts. It features their usual short songs with off the wall lyrics. Many of the songs here have become favorites among the group's fans. A special mention has to go to "Fingertips", which has become a cult favorite among cult favorites. It's not so much a song, as it is 21 mini-songs strung together. In fact, all 21 parts have separate track listings. This makes for a fun listening experience when you play the CD on the "shuffle" mode of your player. Recommended to They Might Be Giants fans.
