Customer Reviews of Apocalypse Now
Apocalypse Pow ! Francis Ford Coppola's ground breaking vietnam epic has engrained itself in American culture for many reasons. One is the incredible cinematography that infuses a surreal, dreamy quality that takes the viewer through a mystical time period of hatred, madness, insanity, thought-provoking wonder. The story follows Martin Sheen. who has been sent to find the insane Colonial Kurtz and "terminate him, with extreme predujice". The moment the film opens with the sound of helicopter blades buzzing in the backround and "THe End"(music by the DOORS) playing wimsically, the audience knows they are in for a journey. Sheen and a group of other recruits are sent up the Nung river into Cambodia to find Kurtz. Only Sheen knows of the missions deadly ending. As they make their way into cambodia, Sheen begins to identify with Kurtz's unexpected yet suddenly reasonable course to insanity. The pilgramage that Sheen makes leads him to a symbolic, haunting, emotionally tugging finale that, while somewhat too cerebral makes for a chilling end and reality. Look for an oscar nominated performance by Robert Duvall and his now infamous "Ride of the Valkyries" scene. THe widescreem format especially livens this encounter. This film was nominated for best picture, won two academy awards and was ranked #29 on the AFI's top 100 list.
A tale of Human Nature
I submitted a review of this before - But it must have gotten lost
Based on the Joseph Conrad novel 'The Heart Of Darkness', Apocalypse Now ranks as one of the greatest movies of all time, totally stamped on our pop-culture. Forged by the awesome vision of both John Milius and [director] Francis Coppola, the film is set during the Vietnam War where Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) is ordered by the Army to take a navy patrol boat into Cambodia and kill the renegade Colonel Kurtz. The journey of Captain Willard not only becomes a lesson about the horror of war, but also about the very nature of humanity. While most films are lucky if they contain one or two great sequences, Apocalypse Now is nothing but a series of great sequences tied together by the river, the river that takes Captain Willard straight to Colonel Kurtz and the films misunderstood ending. Confusing to some, the end is perfect as fails to answer any questions about 'right' and 'wrong' - Questions easily lost during the Vietnam War.
Apocalypse Now is better that Platoon, Full Metal Jacket or even the overrated 'Saving Private Ryan' because it simply goes beyond those films. It goes beyond war straight into the soul where it discovers things about humanity many don't want to know. It is, in short, a tale of Human Nature.
A True Masterpiece!
I watched this movie in 1978 when it first came out and was totally in awe! Francis Ford Coppola spent almost 3 years making this film and it was well worth it. The all star cast in this film rocks! Everytime I watch this film, I wind up mimicing the characters. The lines are memorable! (I love the smell of Napalm in the morning.) It is the greatest movie ever made!
