Unlike most racing games Apex has elements of role playing game progression: your in-game persona improves as you achieve success on the track. At the start of the game players will find themselves in charge of a dinky garage manned by a generic stubbly-faced mechanic. Successful performance in a race will drive "sales" of whatever type of car you're racing; this has two big effects. First, you'll notice your garage gradually transform from a two-man shack to a large assembly facility staffed by a variety of new personalities. Second, sales points can be saved and spent on research and development of new, high-performance cars. The races themselves progress in a fairly standard manner, with a series of cups and circuits that unlock new cups and circuits as you complete them. Completion of races in the single player "Dream Mode" will unlock cars and tracks for use in the multi player "Arcade Mode."
Graphically Apex is everything you'd expect out of a modern Xbox game, with pixel shading and reflective surfaces to spare. One of the highlights of the game is the incredibly well done race environments. They're consistently life-like and just plain fun to drive. If the game suffers in any one area it's the controls, which manage to be neither as realistic as a racing sim nor as simple as an arcade racer. It's a strange mix between the two genres and takes some getting used to, and there are a few aspects of the physics of racing (like taking hairpin corners or making contact with other cars) that just feels wrong. While Apex has definitely earned descriptions like "great", "fun", and "unique", a few minor flaws keep it from words like "amazing" and "must have."--Jon "Safety Monkey" Grover
Pros:
- Excellent Graphics
- Racing environments are simply a lot of fun to drive through
- Interesting new RPG elements like sales and development
- Controls feel a little awkward
- Very few cars and tracks initially available in multiplayer

Customer Reviews of Apex
Worth the price! Beautiful Mitsubishi 2000 Eclipses I bought this game because I thought it looked neat, a concept I haven't seen in a racing game. Creating your own car company and manufacturing your own cars to race. The basic plot of the game is to build cars and race them to gain exposure to sale as many as you can. This is called the Dream Mode. When you sale a certain amount of cars it unlocks the right to create other cars and expand your business. You start off with a roadster car, and work your way up to creating a sportscar, super sportscar and eventually a dreamcar. The only catch with the creating aspect of the game is that you don't really create, you just choose a design you like and some guy that works for you in the game builds it for you. Also, your company grows as the game progresses. Your office gets bigger, you hire more people to help out, and of course your garage gets bigger and better. As you progress through the game you also unlock licensed vehicles as well as concept vehicles you can race in single race and two-player mode. Not many games allow you to race third generation Mitsubishi Eclipses. However this game has the 2000 Eclipse in the RS, GT, and GT racing models. The racing Eclipses are very nicely designed, and armed to the teeth! A big positive for me was the actual racing of the game. The cars always stay together through the entire race, instead of spreading out, which makes the entire race a battle to the end. It is very easy to lose the lead, but also very easy to regain the lead. You always feel like it is a close race every time, but a race you always have a chance to win. I hate those frustrating racing games that make you run a perfect race to win, this game is not like that. Although I was a bit disappointed with not being able to have more "hands on" with designing of the cars, and only being able to race the Eclipses in the single race and two-player mode, it was still a neat concept and fun to play. I think this game is definately an under-rated game.
Great graphics w/NO slow-down...2 thumbs up!
"APEX Racing" for the XBOX is deep. There's not one negative thing I could say about it. Lavishly smooth graphics with NO slowdown. That's always a plus in my book. The cars handle great. I love how the car never feels like it's going to spin into a fish-tail at every turn like many racing games. While it's a bit arcadish, it still has a fantastic feel to it. Lastly, there's 54 tracks(as it claims on the back of the game case). I'm sick of spending a fortune on a race game, only for it to have 8 or 12 tracks. I have a feeling I'll be playing this one for awhile.
2 thumbs up to Atari and Milestone for a fantastic racer.
