Customer Reviews of Anything But Love
A Movie Star Is Born..... I caught a sneak preview of Standard Time recently. The film's title in the trailers I'd seen and at the preview was "Anything But Love," in case you're looking for information or listings for the film's showtimes anywhere. I'm not sure why the distributors or the studio felt the need to change the title to "Standard Time" but they've done that.
In any case "Standard Time" has a more or less standard storyline of girl-meets-boy. Isabel Rose plays a young woman with dreams of a career as a chanteuse in elegant supper clubs, dressed in forties-style glamorous gowns, with an audience of champagne-drinking bon vivants passing a pleasant evening in song and romance. Andrew McCarthy plays a songwriter and accompianist who happens across Ms. Rose's character at an audition. Not going to give away any more now....you'll have to see the film to know what comes of their chance meeting.
While the film's premise is not wholly original, it does have a nostalgic charm all its own, owing largely to Isabel Rose's obvious affection for the golden days of sophistication, women and song, when singing was a real talent and not an afterthought. Rose herself may not be Barbra Streisand in voice, but she has a decent voice and the "look" of a songstress from that era. She carries herself quite well and has real screen presence, more of which I hope moviegoers will see in more movies to come.
She also was responsible for writing the screenplay, further evidence of her devotion to the subject matter and bringing it to colorful life on the big screen. She has real on-screen chemistry with Andrew McCarthy, as well as the rest of the cast.
Isabel Rose is seen in almost every frame of the film---witness a new movie star in the making. She's got the looks, the acting talent, a good voice and the smarts to write her own film. She could go on to have a great career like La Streisand!
