Installation is simple: just register for service online or via a toll-free number, plug the connecter into a phone jack, allow the unit to configure itself (this can take up to 20 minutes), then plug an ordinary telephone into the device.
In our tests, we made several nationwide long distance calls. Dialing was slightly delayed as the unit decided whether to pass each call through the local phone company (for local calls) or through the AmeriVoice network. In the latter case, a recorded message thanked us for using the network.
Sound quality ranged from good to very good, never excellent, never truly bad, with some calls having a very soft echo and others having a very slight fuzziness. But all conversations were readily comprehensible. There was no discernible transmission delay between our speaking and our party hearing and responding to us.
AmeriVoice does not permit commercial or "commercial-like" calling on its standard plan. While we quarrel with AmeriVoice's definition of commercial-like--more than 15 different long-distance numbers called in 24 hours or more than 90 aggregated minutes to the same number in any 24-hour period--the plan should meet the needs of a typical residential caller. Just don't talk to Aunt Tilly for more than 90 minutes at a time.
Overall, for residential customers who already spend at least $20 per month on long distance, the AmeriVoice Connector offers a simple low-cost option with good quality. (Editor's note: For the benefit of this review, AmeriVoice provide us with a free temporary account.) --Mike Brown

Customer Reviews of AmeriVoice Connector for Unlimited Residential Long Distance
Amerivoice is false advertising, theft of service Amerivoice has falsely advertised "unlimited service" and is ripping off consumers. I had this for 1-1/2 years but now they are strictly enforcing time limits. Did work good and quality was excellent but now its only a block of 1200 minutes per month for $29.95, not unlimited. They are monitoring all your calls on spreadsheets, as soon as you go over the allottment they will e-mail you a 5-day cancellation notice unless you renew and confirm service at 3.9 cents per minute. Obviously Amerivoice can no longer fulfill the unlimited long distance service that was advertised in media and on packaging at Office Depot, Costco. Amerivoice should be at top of the list for FTC enforcement action as well as a class action lawsuit. Sprint and SBC now both offer true unlimited long distance for an additional $20 per month as part of local phone packages, a much better and cheaper choice
Redefinitions and loose terms of service.
We bought the connector at Costco in the box, and the language on the box is an entirely inaccurate description of the services. I had the service for many months, and this last month they dropped us at their whim with no warning, with no prior issues. We always paid on time, and hadn't used it a whole lot before, but this last month we use service more than usual and they drop us. Although their terms of service allow them to drop you for any reason, clearly good service implies an ethical treatment above that which is legal.
Beware that if you sign up with them they do not agree to give you any specific level of service (or any service at all), despite what the box may claim. > 90 minutes is commercial? Since when is length of a single call a good distinction between commercial and residential? It is clearly a redefinition of what is truly residential. Unusual definitions are, to me, a form of bait and switch.
I thought about giving some stars for the fact that their service is technically very good, but that technology means nothing when they decide not to give it. Essentially, there is no real exchange in this deal other than that you agree to pay them for the hope that they will give you service. So I am interpreting it as an utter failure in being a legit service agreement and giving them a one.
It works great for me
I have three units working in my office and one in my home and they have been great.
The quality of the service and quality of transmission has been excellent.
