Next is "Without Diana," starring character actor Billy Green Bush as a returning World War II veteran whose young daughter, Diana, feels alienated from him after his prolonged absence. After rebuffing his warm overtures, Diana disappears in a forest and is presumed dead. The story (by Steven Spielberg, creator of the series) then jumps ahead several decades, where we find the now-doddering dad and his wife preparing for the latter's passing and still pining for their lost little girl--who makes a surprise appearance at a crucial moment. This sentimental ghost story gets a boost of pure drama from director Lesli Linka Glatter.
Finally, the goofy "Fine Tuning" closes things out with a story about three school kids, all guys, who invent a radio telescope that picks up signals from other planets. Instead of hearing greetings from our extraterrestrial neighbors, however, the boys find evidence that a distant world is enamored of our old reruns of I Love Lucy and Milton Berle's comedy shows. Clever and funny, "Fine Tuning" is directed by actor Bob Balaban and graced with an appearance by the real Uncle Miltie. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews of Amazing Stories - Book Five
Strong but eclectic entries in 2 season television series. This tape consists of three episodes, 'The Pumpkin Competition', 'Without Diana' and 'Fine Tuning.' Polly 'Kiss my grits' Holiday(Gremlins) once again portrays an old miser, quite well, I might add. Some humorous situations makes this episode play out like a fun short story... with a message. A great musical score helps make this a strong entry. The budgets for some of the individual episodes were very high and the opening of Without Diana is a good presentation of the value of that expense. Some of the brief images are beautiful and lean toward Norman Rockwell. Seperation is at the heart of Without Diana. (Lesli Linka Glatter returned to this in Twin Peaks.) the child's discomfort with her father (he had been away fighting World War 2) is an unsettling loose end. It is difficult to grasp Diana's reason for ignoring Dad and, after she vanishes, it adds to the fathers pain. After all, forty years go by with the father understanding that Diana disappeared happy with everything in her life except him. There is a great transition that very economically lets the viewer 'catch-up' forty years. It is slightly laughable that a couple after losing their own child would be able to run a successful business watching other peoples children. The musical score by Georges Delerue and John McPherson's photography are nothing short of gorgeous. Finally, Fine Tuning. With this weak premise, how can we expect anything. That may be the reason this entry stands up on it's own, but, it is difficult to not see its charms. Balaban (Gershwin's Trunk, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Parents Dir.) steps behind the camera here and shows a wonderful eye and respect for comedy. The cameo by Milton Berle, although brief, shows why he is a legend in television. The 'potato-like' alien heads are very expressive and the alien interpretations of earth sitcoms are very fun. Although uneven as a whole, individually strong episodes.
