Customer Reviews of Aluminum Pepper Grinder
Doesn't grind well I've owned this grinder for about 6 months, it never has ground well - the peppercorns get stuck inside and don't find their way easily to the grinder. I bought this one because I couldn't bring myself to spend [$$$] to get the "real" grinder that this one imitates.
To get the pepper to grind I constantly have to shake and tap on the side of the grinder. I've tried different adjustments of the grind, different types of peppercorns, tried overpacking the pepper, and underpacking it, all with the same result.
I'm looking for a better one now, came across this one and thought I'd pass on my experience. My advice - pass on this one for a better one.
I LOVE this grinder!
I just recently ordered two of these pepper mills based upon an experience with them at my kitchen not too long ago. One of my fellow chefs owns one, and uses it to grind his pepper at the very last possible moment, usually as the food is just hitting the saute pan! All I had to do was open the trap door on the side, fill it with pepper corns, shut the door, adjust the coarseness wheel, and start grinding. THAT EASY! I had incredibly fresh ground pepper on demand, and there was no need for me to clean up any spilt pepper corns from my cutting board!
The average home cook does not understand how important it is to use herbs and spices that are as fresh as absolutely possible. A store bought ground pepper or ground nutmeg, or even cinnamon will NEVER have the same flavoring power as a freshly ground or grated spice! At our restaurant, we typically grind our white and black pepper every morning that we arrive, and always make just enough for one day's use. Whatever is left is placed in a jar, wrapped up tightly with plastic wrap, and used in soups or broths where the power and amount of flavor will not be as noticeable. With this pepper mill, there's no need to worry about grinding large amount at once, you can simply grind whatever you need at the moment, and have no waste!
I'm looking foward to using my two new peppermills and will recommend them to everyone I know who loves to cook!
Salut et Bon Appetit!
aluminum AND plastic
This pepper grinder is (...) cheaper than others which look like it, but-
1. the bottom plate (on which is mounted the grinding mechanism) is white plastic
2. the grinding mechanism itself, while adjustable, is not very good in very coarse mode.
I was surprised that it was so cheap. Of course, I found out when it arrived that the old "you get what you pay for" is still true. I don't know how long it will last since I have only had it for a fortnight. Still, it's not bad - namely, the outer shell (that can be seen) is metal, the handle and ther adjustment are reasonably convenient, and the side filling mechanism is great. On the other hand, the plastic bottom plate (hidden under the outer shell' skirt) is cheasy and the mechanism looks doubtful to me. All in all, it still seems to be a reasonably good deal (...).
If, however, you are loooking for the real thing - i.e. full metal with a high-end mechanism - then don't buy this one.
Best,
