Customer Reviews of Alleged in Their Own Time (Limited Editi
Whheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehoooo! You know, I actually talked a friend into burning my LP of this onto CD some months before I discovered it was to be issued in Japan? Even AFTER it was issued in Japan, I didn't know about it, until a friendly Amazon reader sent me an e-mail. THIS IS THE FINEST HOLY MODAL ROUNDERS ALBUM EVER RECORDED, way back 'round 1975. Weber, we gather from the liner notes, was a bit "wasted" during these sessions, in one sense or another, and it's true, his contributions aren't as significant as on other discs. But who cares? THE SONGS ARE TERRIFIC! Luke Faust and Robin Remaily more than compensate for Weber being a bit out of it, and Stampfel has never been more energetic, and Weber DOES put in a verse or a song here and there. Sure, the finest moments -- "Low Down Dog," "Nova," "Synergy," and "Random Canyon" -- are reissued on the POTATO disc, but so WHAT? The whole album is terrific and should be heard as a whole! The other cuts include "Across the Alley from the Alamo," "Rocky Road," "Chitlin Cookin' Time in Cheatham County," "Voodoo Queen Marie," "Monday Morning,""She's More to be Pitied," "Shoot that Turkey Buzzard," "Don't Seem Right," and "New Reuben's Train" (which replaces the drug references of the original with references to lesbianism -- don't quite understand it, but it's fun). Maybe one or two others that I forget. It's GRRRREAT. This is the folkiest, funniest, liveliest Rounders album (barring maybe the first two discs with only Stampfel and Weber, which just ain't as musically, um, "mature."). Some notes about the Japanese release -- the gatefold mini-LP style disc is very pretty (cover is some items from Stampfel's bottle cap collection) but the lengthy and often obscene liner notes by Stampfel and Antonia have been translated into Japanese (and omitted in English) and the title on the spine has been Japanized (ALLENGED IN THEIR OWNTIME, a worthy try - that's what it sez on MY copy, anyhow). I sent Stampfel a bottlecap from Japan once, plus some kinky stickers... don't know if he ever got 'em, alas. Best lyric on the disc (from NOVA:) "Time is on my side/ Slime is on my tide/ I ride my time slide all the time/ I'm lazy / Mickey Mouse is watching from his well known dial/ He knows a myth is as good as a mile/ Rescue party searchin' through the smokin' pile / Time capsules sure are different from time bombs." BUY THIS DISC! Sounds great and the price is amazing, considering it's a Japanese import...!
