A collection of three episodes, The Rise and Fall of Meathead chronicles two battles in Mike Stivic's inner war: being a liberal, swingin' 1970s guy versus someone who might be a lot closer to Archie than Mike would care to admit. The first episode, however, is relatively Mikeless. In need of a can of cling peaches, the Bunker kingdom is almost lost in "Edith's Accident," when the dingbat dents someone's car in the supermarket parking lot and--horror of horrors--leaves her name and number on the car's hood. Archie is convinced this will lead to their financial ruin. The second episode of the collection begins to plumb the familiar territory of Mike's liberal nature: Just how liberal is it? When "Mike's Appendix" has to be removed, he is forced to choose between a man and a woman physician. Despite her lower fees and excellent reputation, the idea of a female doctor doesn't sit very comfortably with Mike. The real problem, however, is that with the current state of his appendix, it's getting less possible to sit comfortably at all. Rounding out the collection is "Mike's Problem," in which exam anxieties throw a wrench into Mike and Gloria's normally robust sex life. A mark of true desperation, Gloria turns to Edith for advice, and Mike turns to Archie. Archie then seeks counsel from Henry Jefferson, since, according to Archie, "his people" are such expert lovers. --Bob Michaels

Customer Reviews of All in the Family - The Rise and Fall of Meathead
Actually, Edith steals two of the three shows on this tape Despite the title of this particular tape, the first episode, "Edith's Accident" (Episode #20, November 6, 1971) deals with the repercussions when Edith (Jean Stapleton) accidentally dents somebody's car at the supermarket with a large can of cling peaches (in heavy syrup). Of course, honest Edith left a note on the windshield and Archie (Carrol O'Connor) is incensed, especially when the owner of the car shows up and turns out to be a priest (Barnard Hughes). This is far and away the best episode on this tape. The other two episodes do indeed focus on Mike Stivic (Rob Reiner) and prove that "All in the Family" went after the holes in his liberal attitudes as much as they did Archie's conservative beliefs. In "Mike's Appendix" (Episode #48, December 2, 1972), Mike has to have surgery and picks a male doctor to perform the operation rather than a female doctor, which stuns Gloria (Sally Struthers). It seems Mike talks the talk but will not walk the walk, especially with his appendix about to burst. Then we have the script which has the honor of being the episode that CBS executive were most worried about (after the pilot). In "Mike's Problem" (Episode #22, November 20, 1971), Mike is so worried about his grades that it makes him impotent. Needless to say, Gloria is not happy about the situation and she even goes so far as to ask Edith for advice. The network agreed to let Norman Lear make the episode and when it aired the network collapsed, the Union was dissolved and the earth spun out of orbit and crashed into the sun. It goes without saying, that back then all of the television executives were undoubtedly male.
