Customer Reviews of Alien Worlds
A bleeping classic I saw S.P.O.C.K live in Sandviken, Sweden in 1993 I believe it was. I think this event took place before their debut album "Five year mission" was released. I loved the analog sounds, the Star Trek lyrics and the catchy songs. Besides, Android and Cybernoid looked cool on the small stage.
When the album came I got it and since then it has turned many a turn in my cd player. Despite that I didn't buy "Alien worlds" right away. When I did I was abducted by it. With the new member Plasteroid and Cpt. Eddie B. Kirk now also a live member of the band S.P.O.C.K was back with another trekpop album.
"Mirror world": A good pop song starts the album. Directly you hear that this album is better produced and mixed than the first one. Nothing really special though.
"Astro girl": Liking it for bass bubble I loved this track from the first time. I still think it's one of the best songs S.P.O.C.K have done. Synth pop at it's poppiest and best.
"All ET:s aren't nice": At first I didn't really understand why this one became a single, but it grew on me. I think it's the simple but effective chorus that does it.
"Take me to the stars": Somewhat flat. Nothing really happens except for the wonderful synth solo after about 2:37.
"Trouble with Tribbles": This one has got a shuffle feeling to it. The deviating rhythm is it's greatest asset and makes it one of the highlights on the album.
"Abducted": The sense of abduction and indescent probing creeps up on you. Nice chorus and great demonstrating effects when Android sings of "green guys all around, making strange sounds".
"PS9": I've never been a fan of S.P.O.C.K:s happiest and "partiest" tracks. This one is not an exception. Irritating melody sounds, irritatingly repetitive singing.
"Lost in space": A funny song. The rhythm reminds me of my little Casio keyboard, refreshingly different than those of the other songs. Also, the musical phrases are 3 bars instead of the ordinary 4. A funny bend on the melody sound. Funny's the word.
"Cosmic boy": This is a happy party track but with more brains than "PS9". Chorus singing of the beautiful kind S.P.O.C.K didn't spoil you with back in those days. Makes you jump to the beat.
"Space is the place": Again there is some beautiful singing, this time in a beautiful song. Android talks about his space vagabond nature and you believe him. "Space is the place for me to be".
All in all, a worthy successor to the first album. It could be worth 5 stars despite the flaws I've mentioned but I don't think it's really as good as the 5 star albums "S.P.O.C.K: 1999" and "2001: a S.P.O.C.K oddyssey". Buy them too.
