Customer Reviews of Alice Cooper: Welcome to My Nightmare
Worth every penny for the commentary track I'm a fan of the original Alice Cooper group (which broke before this album and tour was conceived).Although the album is great the concert itself can seem a bit "cheesy" at times and the band tends to lean towards a (by 70s standards) heavy metal type of sound. What makes the DVD so great is Alice's (and his assistants) comments throughout the entire concert-funny,informative and at times a confession of his past alcohol problems.Concert highlights include the dance routine during "Some Folks" and the live action/film footage combination of "Escape".If you get it,get it on DVD.
three and a half
Having never seen this show before, I can say it does have some interesting moments of the show that newer fans like myself find intresting to see during one of the earlyer shows such as this!
The sound quality has been restored to 5.1 surround. But its still pretty shonkey. The overall sound quality to some parts is pretty good, where as other parts its either not clear, or they have edited it badly? I'm not too sure whats happend? bu an exsample is on the last song "Department of youth" it has a very scratchy loud sound to it when it starts, then all off a sudden changes into CD quality sound! I dont know if thats the remastering for this disc? or if the original show on VHS was like that too?
The tracks are pretty good. And its a uniqe version of I'm Eighteen, Alice even comments on it during the adio commentery about him basicly beeing that drunk, but it didnt matter, because he had great musicions that could always save the show! Even tho he didnt say it in the exact words, you get the point that he means he was that drunk, the band couldve carried on for ages till he regained controll of himself!
Alice also mentions somthing thats very true, Even if you dont like the music, theres always somthign to watch. From puppets in a toy box, to dancing skeltons, dancing spiders, his wife Cheryl dancing through out the show. And even after about 25 years, the jumping in and out of the movie sequence is still pretty amazing! The show is definitly a great show!
The audio commentary is worth listning to. As Alice and whoever the other guy is talk about the show, and explain some things in the show that you probably wouldnt have picked up on, and also make a few funny lines along the way that dont bore you to death like so many audio commentarys do. This ones Audio commentary (A.C! how ironic) is worth listning to!
Unfortunatly for my regioun 4 version it didnt come with the interveiws or photos, that this version says it comes with :( and it did not come with the quiz either :(( The regoin 4 (australia) only comes with the commentary.
Overall, i'd recomend it for fans of Alice who want to see the old show. And how much more theatrical it was compared to more recent shows like "brutal planet" but I wouldnt recomend it to non Alice fans. I was interested because it was Alice's show a few years before i was even born! so i was curious to know what he was like back then? But as an overall show to purchase, well, dont pay alot for it is my recomendation. If its a good price, then thats about what it will be worth, dont pay too much for this show!
It would have been even better if Alice threw in some more bonus features aswell. The jewel case of WTMN came with a video of "Elected" which was not on this show, and Alice comments on that not beeing on the show... plus he said that 2 shows where recorded and filmed! and this show is the best of the 2 nights at Wembly. So if other songs, or footage was laying around somewhere, could it have been included here?
Dont pay too much for this. And I dont recomend it to newer fans of Alice. But it is intresting if you want to see how the shows of the 70's where performed! It is quite a rock'n'roll broadway type of show! with a few suprises here and there! But be aware that I dont think it has been restored too well! It may only be a show for those interested in it!
The DVD that converted me...
I read the other reviews of this DVD and was shocked that people rated it as mediocre. If you at all consider yourself an Alice Cooper fan, then this is a necessity! It is the only current way for people to see the awesomeness that is a real live alice cooper performance. Given, his voice is weaker than in recordings due to his drunken state, but I think this really adds to the authenticity of his role as the demented character we see him act out. Not to mention, if you've ever done a stage show, its amazing that they could pull all this off with all the costume changes and props...
I wasn't the biggest alice cooper fan before watching this DVD, but I have now seen it three times through and everytime I love it more. Incorporating great music and performance, playing on vaudeville, yet making it completely sick and twisted, its conceptual genius beyond belief. Not to mention the slew of entertainers he inspired. In summary, Alice Cooper is a god, and this is a clear example of why.
