Customer Reviews of Alexander - Director's Cut (2-Disc Widescreen Special Edition)
Interesting Pace and Perspective! In spite of unfavorable press, this movie provides clues into Alexander in a very personal way, which bodes well for those wanting to learn about Alexander the man and humanitarian. If you are looking for war and action, you will find it throughout the film. Alexander's journey through Europe and Asia is mapped out well. I think what many did not expect is the personal element, which is absent in most Hollywood epics. The dramatic pace of the film is disturbed by the constant shifting back and forth in time. The pace is the weakest link. The action and forward motion is tremendously disturbed. This adds to the brief sense of boredom one feels mid-film. Then again, whenever the film leaps back in years, it highlights some aspect of Alexander's personal experience. <

>You will learn that Alexander is a sensitive soul, a touch effeminate, and tortured by the ghosts of his past. His mother led him to be brave but she disrupted that strong sense of security that his father had. Alexander wanted to prove something, perhaps his manhood since his sexuality seems to have been an object of constant infatuation, not only by those who lived in his time but also by the current era. There is very little sexual interest in the film and so it surprises me that people have carried on so much about it. From the film it is obvious that Alexander loves men, one man he loves very deeply, but not so much in an overtly sexual way. I don't think one can label a sexuality on Alexander, he is a libertine in all ways; "my Asians" struck me powerfully. His bride was a very dark woman with whom Alexander felt no strong bond and one that his mother despised, but his need to branch out, to mix the races, join mankind, and love the world was overwhelming. Therefore, we can draw two conclusions: Alexander was running away from something or Alexander was running toward something. I choose the latter. By the time a man reaches 32 years old, some of the blinders of his twenties have been removed. Alexander was not naive. <

>Angelina Jolie is THE STAR. Her acting is excellent and authentic. Her tone of voice is well studied, even with its occasional relapse into modern dialect. Otherwise, the presence of the blond hair and Anglo-Saxon accents were disconcerting at times. The Persions looked like Greeks and Greeks looked like Scandinavians and Indians looked like Persians. This is a huge drawback, especially when Jolie looked and sounded quite authentically Middle-Eastern/Greek. <

>At last, an epic smart enough to survey the man and his inner soul, which led him to great lands and distant horizons. Not since The Ten Commandments have I been so absorbed in a character, and rightly so because Alexander the Great is man far beyond classifications of Sexuality, Nationality, Race, and Creed! This movie exemplifies that well. <

A Real Greek Trajedy
This is among the worst movies I've ever seen. Although the cinematography was stunning, the screenplay, directing, and editing was painfully intricate and wandering. Stone combined endlessly long, droll monologues with continually distracting time jumps. In the end, Alexander is protrayed not as a noble character with a fatal flaw, but rather as a flawed character devoid of any real nobility. The only memorable performance was delivered by Jolie. Her portrayal of Alexander's psychotic mother was brilliant. This, however, was not enough to save this traject waste of celuloid. This is one of those situations where you should believe the critics!
