Customer Reviews of Age of Mythology Special Edition
THE BEST PC GAME OF THE YEAR! And here I was thinking that it couldn't get any better. I mean, really, how could Age of Mythology possibly get any more interesting, exciting, addictive, and fun? Well, the long-awaited "Age of Mythology: The Titans" does just that. It is, simply put, AMAZING! Everything you loved about Age of Mythology is back, but this time it's all BIGGER and BETTER.
The new culture, the Atlanteans, adds tons of new myth units, cultural attributes, god powers, maps, buildings, upgrades, characters, gods, heroes, and the deadly Titans which can overpower all other units if created and can be created by all cultures. You can even play around with time! The new graphics and music help to enhance game-play to a level not previously reached by Age of Mythology. Ensemble Studios have also polished basic aspects of the game. The new "repeat build" button will continue to supply you with units as long as long as you have the resources. If found this to be very helpful as I got to concentrate on other aspects of the game (such as destroying all enemies) instead of constantly commanding "create new unit" every time I lose one.
The new campaign dwarfs that of Age of Mythology. It focuses primarily on the Titans and is so incredibly involving that you can easily play for six hours without noticing. The story is much better and the scenery and construction of the various landscapes is far more detailed and realistic.
This is a 5 star game that isn't to be missed by fans of the original Age of Mythology or the Age of Empires games. It's all well worth your money, I assure you. Once you pop this CD into your disk drive you'll open the door to hours, days, weeks, months, years of exciting new game-play. Don't miss it.
Thanks to this game, I now actually like RTS!
Having never played any of the other 'Age' games, and the only other RTS in my resume is Warcraft I, II, and C&C, it definitely will take alot to get me to like an RTS game (Warcraft III...only went half way before I got uninspired).
I bought this game on impulse, like so many things I buy. Having read several positive reviews online I was hopeful. Having spent 16 hours straight after getting this game, I was hooked.
There really isn't much variety in units and buildings, but that's a good thing. Following in the veins of WCIII, you don't get to choose which civilization you can take on the Single Players campaign. You play through the boots of Arkantos (there are 3 missions where he is absent, though), a greek hero, but you spend around 10 missions each on Egypt and the Norse region, with the different gods and units of each. Each mission you play is different then the ones you've already played, keeping the game fresh til the very end. The difficulty level, however, is very daunting. Never played easy mode, but the difficult mode is hardly fair.
Although the God powers seem awesome, I played through the game using them only once in a while. But I found that if in a tough situation, using those God powers helped shift the tide of battle.
Enjoyed, and now on the look-out for other great RTS.
Fantastic Expansion
The Titans Expansion is the add-on to Age of Mythology. It provides a load of new features, including a fantastic campaign featuring the Titans of Tartarus. You play as Kastor, the son of Arkantos, (hero of the Age of Mythology campaign), to rid the world of the Titans escaping from Tartarus. Throughout the campaign, you have to use strategy to defeat the large, hulking Titans with massive HP and attack numbers.
There is also a new civilization introduced in the Titans, the Atlanteans. The Atlanteans are different from the rest of the civilizations in many ways. For example, the Atlanteans gain favor from their Town Centers, quite like how the Egyptians gain favor from building monuments. Also, their villagers gather and build much more quickly than other civilizations, but at a cost. They are more expensive and require a longer period of time to train. However, citizens can be transformed into Heroes by the click of a button, (and quite a bit of resources). When you choose the Atlanteans, you worship one of three gods, Kronos, Gaia, or Oranos. Each of them have unique powers that greatly benefit your civilization. Kronos has a power that lets you Time Shift your buildings, literally uproot one from the ground and transport it to another place within your line of sight. Oranos lets you build Sky Passages that can transport your troops and citizens across all sorts of terrain. And finally, Gaia creates Lush around all of her buildings, making it so that no enemy can build there. Also, some Atlantean god powers can be used more than once such as Shockwave. Shockwave stuns enemy units in a certain area and can be used three times. However, to use it again, you must wait for a certain period of time, which varies which each god power.
A few reasons I like this expansion is because of the new campaign, the new random maps it introduces, the changes to the Scenario Editor, the new god powers, and the Titans. Yes, the Titans. The Titans are the massive creatures that can win or lose a game. First, you must advance to the Titan Age and build a Titan Gate, which takes a very long time to build. Then, your mighty Titan will be summoned to wreak havoc on your enemy. Overall, I believe that the Titans Expansion is an excellent addition to Age of Mythology.
