Customer Reviews of Against All Odds (Special Edition)
Surprisingly touching The first thing that struck my mind when I first started watching this film was the strength of Jeff Bridges' performance. Right from the first scene he pulled me in. After the flashback scenes I really began to care about his character.
In this performance, Bridges does it all, he can appear world-weary in some scenes and completely innocent in other. He appears conservative in one scene, and then ripps his shirt off (revealing his well-built chest and perfect nipples) in the next.
The second thing I noticed was once again how wonderful the lean and angular Woods is as the villian. Next, I saw how fletching Rachel Ward is as the not-so-innocent heroine.
By the time the credits were rolling (with Ward looking as beautiful as ever and Phil Collins crooning on the soundtrack) I realized how much I had grown to love the characters and I was almost sad that the movie was over.
WHAT HAPPENS TO WASHED UP FOOTBALL PLAYERS?
In "Against All Odds", Jeff Bridges plays an aging football player, Terry Brogan, who is released from the LA Outlaws after he injures his shoulder. He blew millions of dollars and is left with nothing more than a Porsche that isn't even paid for. What's the poor guy to do? Work for a slimeball named Jake Wise (played flawlessly by James Woods...of course) and stalk the guy's ex-girlfriend (Rachel Ward). Terry ends up falling in love with Jake's girlfriend and tries to protect her from her ex. If you respect free-spending, point shaving athletes who treat women like dirt then you will enjoy Bridges' character. I find it hard to empathize with him and I really didn't care if he got the girl in the end or not. "Against All Odds" is yet another flick with a protagonist who is difficult to care about. Terry was offered a coaching job after his football career had ended and he should've jumped at the chance instead of becoming involved with shady activities. Then maybe the viewer would actually care about what happens to him.
one of the worst movies of all time
I just saw this movie for the first time and all I can say is, I want those two hours of my life back. Rachel Ward's character gives new meaning to the term "useless female". She was great in the Thorn Birds but she acts exactly the same way here. Jeff Bridges & James Woods do ok here but they're not really likeable, and in the end, nothing seems to change much for the leads. Because of that, I don't understand why the title is "Against All Odds"...
