Customer Reviews of Afterglow
Hit And Miss Compilation. I have been a long time fan of Neil Finn following him from Split Enz to Crowded House to Finn Brothers to his own solo career. I am biased in my thinking about Crowded House because I think the broke up too soon. I like everything they did. This new compilation of unreleased tracks and b-sides is a mixed bag. While there are great songs on here like "I Am In Love", "Help Is Coming", "I Love You Dawn" and "Recurring Dream", there are mediocre songs like "Dr. Livingstone", "My Telly's Gone Bung" and the demo of "Private Universe". Most likely those who will be reading my review are hard-core House fans. I would recommend it to you if you like Crowded House that much. If you are only a casual fan though, I'd skip over this and go for their individual cds or best of cd before deciding whether to buy this one.
Nice collection of extra material
Not quite a "lost album", but almost. Afterglow collects 13 tracks, the "Odds and Sods" of the group's career, as the Who might say. If it were an actual album, it might have been the group's third best, although by nature, the album is a little disjointed. As far as tone goes, the album leans more towards the brighter aspects of the Crowded House and Woodface albums, as most of the songs were recorded in those periods.
The album is a nice collection that flows pretty well, and there are probably a number of groups that would like a collection of songs this strong to be their greatest hits album. The best songs here are "Recurring Dream", a jangle-pop number that predates the group even being called Crowded House; "I Love You Dawn", a pretty love song penned by Neil Finn for his wife, and "Time Immemorial", a folky ballad that was to have closed the Woodface album. Also look for drummer Paul Hester's vocal spotlight on the silly "My Telly's Gone Bung". He's no Ringo, but on the plus side, he's no Ringo. That makes sense if you think about it.
Don't start with this one, but no fan of Crowded House will dislike this album.
Private Universe!
With the inclusion of this c.d. into my Crowded House collection, I now boast of possessing three separate and greatly varying versions of Private Universe. All three are transcendant blissful recordings. The inclusion of this simple, sparsley arranged version (no small feat with Youth at the production controls!) is a wonderful compliment to the original release. The third version, incidentally is a Finsbury Park Italian manufactured bootleg where Maori musicians fill out the end percussion groove splendidly. Neil! Neil! Neil! This is far and away your masterpiece. Grace us with ten more versions of this gorgeous song!
