Customer Reviews of Addams Family:Volumes 1-6
Complete Season DVD Boxsets Would Be A Good Thing! I too grew up on the 70's TV reruns of The Addams Family and I really enjoyed watching it and even though the theatrical movie remakes were ok I think that Carolyn Jones, John Astin, Jackie Coogan, Lisa Loring, Ken Weatherwax and Ted Cassidy will always be the best Morticia, Gomez, Uncle Fester, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch and even though it's nice that The Addams Family TV show has episodes on video tape and to be able to watch them whenever you want, I would like it more to have The Addams Family on DVD in complete season boxsets.
Excellent '60s TV Satire
I grew up with the Addams' Family ('70s reruns) and it remains one of my favorite TV shows from the 1960s. The 2 main stars John Asten as Gomez and Carolyn Jones as Morticia make the show especially good as they nail the characters. And my first crush was on Morticia, especially with that subtle ironic smile she always gives.
One has to wonder how much impact a show like this from the post-JFK pop culture had on igniting the late '60s counter-culture, for on some levels this is about as counter-cultural as you can get. John Asten, a lifelong Buddhist even injects some Eastern stuff into the show, such as his Yoga full lotus (well before The Beatles went to India). And Jones has one episode where she sing-songs "love, love, love" as part of the dialogue (John Lennon's inspiration for "All You Need is Love" perchance?) And one episode is more overt: the one where a beatnik biker comes to visit and finds the Addamses good people, while his father a cop comes to "straighten him out". The Addamses might be weird, but I'll take them over the disfunction of the "normal" American family anyday.
The other aspect is style. From the opening song with the snapping fingers, to all the exotic decore, to Morticia's black widow dress (which gives her just a few inches of space to walk with) to Lurch's harpsicord playing, it's all great. Bottom line is I love this show and it stands at the top of all 1960s sitcoms.
And for you trivia buffs: Ted Cassidy was a radio announcer who covered the JFK assassination in Dallas right before he became Lurch. As I mentioned John Asten and wife run a Buddhist group in California. Carolyn Jones passed away in 1983 of cancer. Lisa Loring (Wednesday) was married to porn star Jerry Butler.
ADDAMS FAMILY
Every one knows that the real addams family are the best from all the rest. Great Movie.
