Customer Reviews of Activision Anthology
A great collection, better than anything Namco or Midway did For the past few years, Midway and Namco have been rereleasing old games in their collections. They would throw 6 to 8 early 80's games on a cd with nothing extra and charge an insane amount of money. Then along came Activision. Activision obviously learned from Midway and Namco's mistakes. Instead of 6 to 8, you get 45 Atari 2600 games. Want extra features? Ok, how about TV comercials from the 80s and those patches you could earn for their games. But they did not stop there. They added a truely impressive 80's soundtrack to keep you going. There are also added ways of playing the game. For example, one method overlays clouds over the game. Another has a large rotating cube with the game on each side. These extra ways of playing the game are interesting, but you will mostly just play the games the way they were. Overall, this is what a collection should be like. If you want to relive the classics or are interested in where the video game industry first got its start, you should check this out.
Come for the nostalgia, stay for the games!
Are you tired of video games that are so complex that you could get a Ph.D. in quantum physics and learn to play three musical instruments in less time than it would take to master one game? Then this compilation of old, old, OLD school video games is for you! Adhering strictly to the less-is-more aesthetic, there are dozens (!) of games in here, each of which is so simple you can learn the rules in less than a minute. But don't let that fool you -- some of these games are a lot of fun, and surprisingly hard! My current favorites are Megamania, Pitfall, River Raid and Enduro, but there are loads of games I haven't even looked at yet. The graphics are unbelievably primitive by modern standards, and although this adds to the nostalgic charm, it's off-putting in some games (notably Pitfall). Also, the sound effects are pretty weak (beeps and boinks are about it). But the games are FUN, and you don't have to read a 150 page Prima strategy guide to understand what's going on. There's also a great '80s soundtrack which, mercifully, can be turned off when you get sick of hearing the same songs over and over. So if you like arcade-style video games and don't mind primitive graphics, get this game -- you won't regret it. It would be nice if today's game designers started making new games with the same simplicity and fun gameplay that these games have, but don't hold your breath.
