The editorial staff of this title has no problem with dystopian and paranoid science fiction--some of the stories in Absolute Magnitude are sterling examples of dark social criticism. Bold, exciting fiction, however, is what drives the publication. Hugo and Nebula award-winning authors, up-and-comers who are just that far away from being recognized at conventions, and complete nobodies who've demonstrated a way with words and a lust for adventure share page space in each lavishly illustrated issue. Readers can expect a rough half-dozen zesty, action-packed stories with no shortage of wit and quality writing. Hard science and reporting features are also included in each issue. Incidentally, when Aboriginal Science Fiction ceased in 2001, Absolute Magnitude picked up a few stories and illustrations in order to carry on that tradition--and ensure certain works saw the light of day. --Edith Sorenson

Customer Reviews of Absolute Magnitude & Aboriginal Science Fiction
A surprise in every issue Absolute Magnitude, now in its 10th year, delivers concise modern Science Fiction often with endings that leave the reader with the "guts turning to water" feeling reminiscent of a good Twilight Zone episode. Today, when leaders in the Sci-Fi genre wonder aloud if stories have become formalistic, Absolute Magnitude offers a variety of story styles. One can find the chrome and plastic techno setting of a deep space vessel, then turn the page and be surprised by a gritty Goth-future tale. There is almost never novella or novelette length features which to be honest tend to ramble.
DNA Publishing's glossy full magazine format does much to make it more attractive to the not so devoted science fiction reader. And may tempt others to discover that Absolute Magnitude may be the torch bearer of the avant-garde as mainstream Sci-Fi goes the way of Reader's Digest.
