Customer Reviews of Abba - In Concert 1979
A TV Prcduction Never Meant For DVD I have have been a ABBA fan since 1974. It would be very easy for me to say great things about this long awaited DVD. When you wait so long for anything new that is available from a group that split-up 22 years ago..ANYTHING is a blessing.
This DVD though is a pretty poor. To be honest, they did not have much to work with. The original footage was designed for a limited television program and was edited very tightly. The sound on the DVD is pretty bad as well. I realize that it was a live concert, but the sound was better on the original TV produced version. All the new sound enhancement did was to make the sound extremely uneven and sounding like someone is turning the volume up and down at different intervals. I am surprised that this DVD was allowed to be sold because of the awful sound quality. With all the technology availabe today ... a MUCH better job could have been done than was shown in the end result. A person could have re-worked the original sound better on their home computer with very little expertise.
The only plus to this DVD are the bonus tracks. Let us all hope that when ABBA THE MOVIE makes it out on DVD, we get a bit more attention to the sound than we got on this one. Someone really dropped the ball here.
A question...
Why exactly was the rehearsal footage with the children's choirs (which I have seen on TV) excised from the DVD cut? Though not exactly scintillating stuff, it was the type of mise en scene that us more casual ABBA fans (and artsy types) appreciate for adding cultural context to mere concert footage and interviews--the type of thing that separates great concert films (e.g. Gimme Shelter, Woodstock) from adequate ones (e.g. The Song Remains The Same, Ziggy Stardust and, yes, The Last Waltz). The dvd is still worth scoring on the cheap, but the omissions make it feel less special.
5 stars for what they had to make with.
I just bought ABBA live in '79 at Walmart today in NJ. I have no problems with sound. I heard some of the European DVDs had problems with sound so maybe that is it. The USA/Canada do not have sound issues I believe unless my DVD is special. It sounds amazing on my bose.
I wish they did have the whole tour but who knows where all that lost footage is. Besides that it is pretty good DVD for only $14.00. The extras are worth getting if you just own the old Japnese VHS version. The makers did a great job with this DVD for what they had to deal with. I know there are edits and the whole 2 hour tour isn't here but they don't have it. If they did it would all be on here. If your an ABBA fan you will love this. Bring on ABBA The Movie, with lots of extra, I hope!!!
