Customer Reviews of AVP - Alien Vs. Predator (Widescreen Edition)
a hit may be too much to hope for A big screen match-up between Alien and the Predators? I'm crossing my fingers, but let's face it, they wouldn't need to combine Aliens and Predators if somebody could write a decent script for either of them. As somebody who loved the first two Alien flicks and thought the first "Predator" was decent, throwing the two at each other is simply a bad idea. Decades ago, Dracula, Frankenstein and even the Wolfman were powerful enough to carry their own movies - then some guy with more marketing sense than appreciation for movie-making wondered - why not team them up. Within a few years these characters would become the stuff of B and Z movies. (Nobody would have expected Dracula and Frankenstein to become straight men for "Abbot & Costello") Somebody should have realized that scripting a vehicle for more than one only reveals how incapable any of the monsters is at carrying his own movie. What's next? "Aliens v. Predator v. Little Nicky?" Franchise-collision is a bad idea. While the idea of tossing Aliens and Predators into a single story worked for Darkhorse comics and at least two video games, a hit on the big screen is a slim chance. While Darkhorse has been making decent bucks with re-tread Alien stories for years, "Alien Resurrection" - a big screen version of a typical Darkhorse story - was a resounding flop and the low-point of the entire series.
Combining the Alien up with any franchise is also a bad idea because it sort of negates its biggest selling point - within its own universe, it is THE alien: completely unlike anything found on hundreds of surveyed worlds. But with the Predator around, our beloved chest-bursting, acid-squirting, malevolently drooling bad-boy is just another violent xenomorph - and this film reminds us how generic an idea Giger's original vision has become. Among other moder-day monsters, "Predator" is also a poor choice - I don't care how many books "Darkhorse" comics has sold, or how successful the games were - Predator and Alien have two inconsistent themes: the Alien is violent and completely implacable, but we only cross paths with it when our greed causes us to seek it out. The Predator on the other hand crosses paths with us when it's in the mood to go hunting for wabbits - instead of a force that channels our greed, it just reverses our roles as the ultimate hunter whether the individual victims are hunters or vegans. Alien victims are in it for the money. Predator victims are sucked in no matter what.
I'd heard rumors of this project for years, but hoped they'd stay rumors. Instead of combining the two, why not just have the guys responsible for "Predator 2" and the last two Alien flicks just hash out where they went wrong, and just pick things up from there?
Been waiting since Predator 2
God it seems like I've been waiting for eternity for this movie to be made. I think that it has real potential though I think they should have left Lance Henrickson out of it. It'll still work though. I'd like to address some of the complaints of other reviewers about the director. Resident Evil and Event Horizon were NOT that bad, I quite liked Event Horizon. Yes the characters were a bit one-dimensional but then again they were HORROR movies made for HORROR movie audiences. People don't go to horror movies to see a lot of character development. People also don't want deep plots with their action or horror movies and he delivered exactlly what was wanted... an entertaining movie in both instances. I think the same will happen with AvP. The movie is about Aliens and Predators, there most likely won't be a lot of character development but yet people will complain about it. Think about the classic King Kong vs. Godzilla movies. Did people go to see a deep plot or character development? Nope... they just wanted to see the monsters slug it out. It will be the same with this movie and I wouldn't have it any other way. Go into the movie with an open mind and be ready for suprises and an actionfest and I doubt you'll be disappointed. Don't go looking for an Oscar winner.
This movie is Fun!!
Anyone who gave this movie a bad review needs to lighten up! This movie is fresh, and does not have anything to do with the first two movies, other than the predator's desire to win and take trophies organic in nature. The story is put together rather well, and I was into this movie much to my surprise. I went to see it with my son because he wanted to see it. I really liked the first movie, and was not to impressed with the second, so I was thinking this would be a stinker. Well, like I said, much to my surprise, I really liked the movie very much. In fact, I am going to purchase the movie next time I go to Target. I have talked to a few other people who have seen the movie and they all agreed, this movie rocks!!!!
