While it's virtually guaranteed to achieve some kind of cult status, A Scanner Darkly lacks the paranoid intensity of Dick's novel, and Linklater's established penchant for loose and loopy dialogue doesn't always work here, with an emphasis on drug-culture humor instead of the panicked anxiety that Dick's novel conveys. As for the use of "interpolated rotoscoping"--the technique used to apply shifting, highly stylized animation over conventional live-action footage--it's purely a matter of personal preference. The film's look is appropriate to Dick's dark, cautionary story about the high price of addiction, but it also robs performances of nuance and turns the seriousness of Dick's story into... well, a cartoon. Opinions will differ, but A Scanner Darkly is definitely worth a look--or two, if the mind-rattling plot doesn't sink in the first time around. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews of A Scanner Darkly (Widescreen Edition)
Are you kidding me? This was an awful movie. There was no story line. Nothing to follow. What a great idea to be wasted.
WHAT !?!?
This movie was aweful, the only reason i gave it 1 star was because the animation rocked, i wish they would make more movies with that animation but for god sakes could you please include a storyline with it ?
Is Your Reality Missing A Few Gears?
Though "A Scanner Darkly" might seem somewhat confusing as it initially unfolds, I encourage you to stick with it - there are great rewards lurking near the end of the film. And like the Sixth Sense - and more recently, Volver - this is a film that you almost have to see twice to truly get all there is to extract from it, due to the fact that what is revealed late in the movie invests what happened earlier with an extra meaning that you most likely could not have grasped when it initially occurred.

>But don't get me wrong: I enjoyed it plenty the first time through as well. A Scanner Darkly is a very human sci-fi saga that is all about layers: surveillance representing self-consciousness and self-awareness, and a story about imposters impersonating imposters. Even the very filming technique - laying animation upon a reality already filmed (known as "rotoscoping") - speaks to the layers that, ironically, are the core of this thoughtful (and oftentimes funny) film.

>Woody Harrelson, Rory Cochrane, and Robert Downey Jr. are all at the top of their games, working well within the live-action/animation combination. Keanu Reeves rises above his usual "Johnny Catatonic" level of acting to convey at least some semblance of emotion. And Winona Ryder gives her best performance of this millenium (granted, that's not saying a whole heck of a lot, but hey - ya gotta start somewhere).

>I feel the animated technique really adds to the story, too, since it's also about blurring the lines between reality and hallucination/illusion, between sobriety and intoxication. And though I myself am not much of a drug user, this filming technique helped me immerse myself in and experience more fully the world of addiction depicted onscreen. My 4-star rating is actually an average: 3.5 for the first viewing, and 4.5 for the second.
