An acting company of four adults dons jumpers and overalls and gathers in a playroom to share the news of the day: Humpty Dumpty fell off the wall, Jack and Jill fell down the hill, and a woman had only a shoe for a home and many, many children to feed. This Nebraska Public Television effort--part of the "Anyone for Tennyson?" series--features rhymes by A.A. Milne, Edward Lear, and Ogden Nash in addition to the more traditional Mother Goose rhymes. The "kids" go outside, where they perch around the edge of a giant sandbox and play on the swings, all the while sharing children's poetry as if in conversation. Then it's back inside for a tea party, which turns out to be more about bubbles than about the caffeinated brew. This 25-minute tape is a little stagy for kids not weaned on live theater. The concept of adults playing kids is hardly new, but they are often accessorized by puppets, and there are no such distractions for children here. (Ages 4 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs

Customer Reviews of A Quiet Evening With Mother Goose
Possibly the worst children's video ever This tape consists of adults aping children and sitting around reciting Mother Goose in verse that is modified to be cutsey and "intellectual" or something. It comes off as shallow and not at all funny and would be completely incomprehensible to a child. It will probably appeal to no one in your family, adult or child and is a complete waste of money. Avoid this one at all costs! It's really terrible.
