Stanley Kubrick's striking visual interpretation of Anthony Burgess's famous novel is a masterpiece. Malcolm McDowell delivers a clever, tongue-in-cheek performance as Alex, the leader of a quartet of droogs, a vicious group of young hoodlums who spend their nights stealing cars, fighting rival gangs, breaking into people's homes, and raping women. While other directors would simply exploit the violent elements of such a film without subtext, Kubrick maintains Burgess's dark, satirical social commentary. We watch Alex transform from a free-roaming miscreant into a convict used in a government experiment that attempts to reform criminals through an unorthodox new medical treatment. The catch, of course, is that this therapy may be nothing better than a quick cure-all for a society plagued by rampant crime. A Clockwork Orange works on many levels--visual, social, political, and sexual--and is one of the few films that hold up under repeated viewings. Kubrick not only presents colorfully arresting images, he also stylizes the film by utilizing classical music (and Wendy Carlos's electronic classical work) to underscore the violent scenes, which even today are disturbing in their display of sheer nihilism. Ironically, many fans of the film have missed that point, sadly being entertained by its brutality rather than being repulsed by it. --Bryan Reesman

This movie stands alone!
First Rate in 1971 and First Rate in 2007. This movie brilliantly deals with one of the deepest riddles that plagues mankind. Namely Man himself. Timeless.

Timeless classic
-In the sea of futuristic sci-fi movies that offer a depressing outlook on the future, we get another one by the late great Kubrick. The movie tells the story of Alex and his gang of hooligans who waltz around causing havoc all around future London. They pick fights with other gangs, beat up people after breaking into their house and in their spare time perform the old in and out with some gal whiles listening to Beethoven. Alex and his gang are quite content with themselves that is till Alex gets sent to clinic to clean up and change his ways with the aid of some eye opening methods. He is changed for the better and when he is let out he finds that the world around him has changed drastically. his friends aren't who they use to be and the people he messed over in his past life still hate his guts so Alex basically has to find a way so live in this new world that he helped mess up. <

>-A lot of movies get massively overpraised as time passes by. a movie that might have been just good when it came out gets translated into a masterpiece 2 decades later and thankfully this movie wasn't one of those overpraised movies but actually deserved all the praise and admiration that people give it. The one thing that shocked me about the movie was how it was branded as controversial and racy when it came out. Apparently people thought the violence was a bit too intense which is kinda laughable by today's standard because I'm sure the violence would have gotten a safe PG-13 in today's world. Although I guess, it wasn't about how graphic the violence was but how wrong it was. I do hear that the violence and sexual nature was described a bit more graphic in the book than it was in the movie so I guess I have to read it for myself to find out. <

>-Malcolm McDowell does a great job of balancing the two versions of Alex he has to play in the movie. The first being bat s**t crazy and the second being appalled by violence. I really do hope that the movie wasn't filmed out of sequence because if it was then that means he had to switch between the two characters which can be quite daunting for any actor do pull off. He didn't do a great of a job that Washington did in "Malcolm X" of going from bad to good but it's still an amazing performance that he gives. Apart from McDowell however there's really on other person that really stands out in the movie. Not to say that everyone was terrible compared to him but it's just that we see more of him than any other person in the movie so we appreciate him a bit more than the others <

>-Kubrick's love for classical music is also greatly utilized here and whiles we don't get to hear as much great music as we did with "2001: A Space Odyssey" we do get a brief scene where Alex bangs a girl in super speed whiles Beethoven blares through the speakers. The original score itself isn't half bad either as it works so well with the movie. I really love the music they play for the first 50 seconds or so for the film's opening which is basically the camera pulling out of Alex' face whiles he stares at the camera with that "I'm better than you" look on his face. The disturbing cinematography also helps the movie a lot with it's uncomfortable close up shots and an overuse of the wide angle lens. It really makes the movie look weird which I guess was it's intended purpose. Most sci-fi movies try to redefine fashion but this movie keeps it simple and modern day as it can get which is a very welcome change from all the futuristic movies that feature people in laughable outfits. <

>-I can perfectly understand why most people don't like the movie but the things they hate about the movie just happens to be what makes it great for me. It doesn't have the shock that it did when it came out but it's still a great movie
